First version of the Map of the Internet. This is definitely not the final version, incredible amount of websites and software companies are not on the map and will be incorporated in later updates.
Map of the Internet - First of its kind on such a scale, this map aims for succesful compendation of The Internet to scale suitable for standartized online navigation. This project is still underway, new versions of this map will be available in ulterior months.
Due to the immense size of the Net, only a miniscule portion of it was chosen to represent it on the map. Otherwise, this map would be unreadable and probably undrawable in entire lifespan of average human being.
This poster includes one full map of the internet, 4 minimaps showcasing NSA surveillance, most used social networks, most used internet browser, and worldwide internet penetration, list of Alexa Top 500 websites, quick timeline of the Internet History, top software companies and much more!

I'm a student and amateur(not full-time professional) graphic designer from Slovakia, Bratislava(Central Europe).
I started making maps about 2 and half years ago, and it has quickly become my free-time hobby. I post my works mainly to deviantart, and until recent days, I was never significantly noticed. It was my hobby, and it still is my hobby, though I am planning to start selling prints of my maps on amazon quite soon(two-three weeks).
Until March 2013, I was working only on minor projects, often making commisioned fantasy map drawings as a side work.
In April, I started to work on my first major project - massive scale political map of the world, which is also on deviantart, and can be found there: the9988.deviantart.com/art/Pol…
In December, I started to work on other two projects, Map of the Internet and Map of the Stereotypes, first version of the Internet Map has already been finished, and Map of Stereotypes will be released sometimes in February.
I was originally inspired by map of the internet created by xkcd, showing most popular social networks as countries and regions, back in 2010. It was not my original idea, but I extended it to such a scale for the first time. I used photoshop for the majority of drawing.
The base style of the map was inspired by the National Geographic Maps, I also used Winkel Tripel Projection and similar border coloring fashion.
I created the map in quite a short time, three weeks to be exact. I often worked early in the morning, and I can say I really enjoyed it.
I got the data about website sizes mainly from Alexa and similar online services.
The map is divided into 2 distinctive parts; the eastern continent, "the old world" showcases software companies, gaming companies and some of the more real-life oriented websites
Western part, "the new world" is composed from two major continent, northern one showcasing social networks, search websites, video websites, blogs, forums and art websites.
All major adult-oriented websites, in addition to varioius warez and torrent sites, are located on the southwestern continent of the map.
In the very south of the map, there is located "Great Southern Land" of obsolete websites and online services.
Outside the main map, there are also 4 minimaps showing NSA monitoring by country, most used browser, most used social network, and internet penetration by country.
The scale between a website's traffic and its size is not exact, but websites are generally portrayed in ratio relative to it.
Map includes mostly english-language websites with some minor exceptions.

The only thing I can suggest is moving Imgur a little closer to Reddit, as imgur is pretty much the de facto image host of reddit and the two have code that interact to that purpose.
Well, since I apparently also have to fill 100 words, I'd also point out that I think the "webcomic" island is very undersized and has a curious selection of names for cities. I mean, I love Oglaf as much as the next guy, but certainly there are larger and more influential wecomics that deserve to be in the few ones that get mentioned, if they're to be relegated to such a small area.

Far from me to discredit your work, and I'll give you one-and-a-half stars for originality because of the added elements and general "beautification" of it all, but I need to remind you, and everyone else who will see this map, that this is not an original idea, and in the Initial Description, you do not mention, anywhere, that "Original Internet Map Idea born out of XKCD ( Here: xkcd.com/195/ , here: xkcd.com/256/ and here: xkcd.com/802/ ).
Though I do commend you on the execution, since you don't clearly indicate previous art inspiration and ideas, I cannot in my mind rate your originality as anything more.

I gotta say, the idea and scope of this are truly remarkable. It is clearly well thought out and carefully crafted. Put simply, it is amazing.
However, I am not sure Google is represented as what it is in a technical aspect. We are so used to using it primarily as a search engine that we forget how it expands. Google is quickly becoming the proverbial back-end software to the internet and I believe that is their goal. As such, Google on a internet world map should appear a bit more foreboding. A bit more... aggressive in size. Also, it should have the the feel that it is almost crowding the nations that surround it as it continues to grow and its borders push against other nations.
I don't mean to cast Google in a negative light in this. It is my home page and I use Android. But in a realistic look at Google as a nation, they are rapidly becoming the predominant first world power of the internet in many ways and the way they have gotten there could be interpreted as the internet's version of militaristic moves.

This is very well done. I cannot believe that you drew it in photoshop freehand. It was a pretty large file, and could not be read without zooming in. It has been done before, but not with this much detail. The side maps and lists were a huge plus too. The stars and patterns made it look like a piece of scroll. The aging effect was also used very well on this.
If I was an archeologist in the next millennia, and I found this, I would believe that it was a map of an alien planet.
To sum it up, very nice work!

This artwork is authentic and innovative because I like how you imagine things and make a possibility of creating this masterpiece. What I have seen is an artwork that is an apple of one's eye because everyone thinks that this is a distinguished artwork.
I like how to draw the map because it looks original and avant-garde, although the layout is different from the actual world we see, but still it is state-of-the-art. The most significant segment of the piece is the internet labeled regions, cities and channels and how they are strongly connected to other internet territories. I also like how you make the list of top internet websites and their histories as well, because that will help people, new to the internet community to understand the essences of the internet world.
Bottom line of this critique: This artwork is extremely a force to be reckoned with and there will be a crown for every achievement you make.
Keep the deviantART and the Internet spirit up. And I wish you good luck in making more creativities and possibilities.

I honestly dont know where to begin...Here goes. This is one of the most wonderful pieces i have ever seen.It's just a map yet at the same time the effort it took to make this excelent piece a reality is truly breath-taking. To add to the fact that it is both well thought out and icrendibly done it mixes everything that is good and bad about the internet itself and presents it in a humorous yet interesting way.All that said it is just a map.Not saying of course that its isn't truly well done map, but the idea itself is pretty stale. It doesn't exactly capture the imagination but it can draw people's interest through its subject.In other words you're just presenting and not allowing much room for the imagination.This is a wonderful piece and it deserves recognition and i express nothing more than my adoration towards it.

That work is currently a state-of-art itself; I think is one of the most interesting and well-made things I've ever seen on Deviantart.
Although a not particularly original and peculiar techique the result is simply astonishing and really eye-catching. The level of detail is impressing, and – if as you say – it still is a pretty rough version of a 1.0 release, I can't even imagine what the final work can be.
The vision is not so innovative, with an usual – even pretty cliche and not always real – layout of the web situation, if the continents and seas disposition is intended in that way.
The overall impact is surely great, and exceptionally well done; you certainly know how to catch the eye of a casual watcher and have all its attention.
FINAL THOUGHT (GLaDOS style): the result of an odd and fantastic way to view the internet blended with an original reinterpretation of a too widely used style is a stunning artwork that can be always improved. So please, keep doing it.
