Description First time I've submitted in awhile, and my own painting at that. It's the latest thing I've done and kinda runs with the theme of my last journal entry.

It also seems to encompass how I'm feeling about life at the moment. Like I'm sitting there on my rock and the world around me is poisoned and floating belly-up.

wow... it's amazing what kinds of interpretations a piece of artwork goes through upon mass scrutiny. The fellow in the yellow hat does not wish to take an oil bath with the fishies here... whether that's fortunate or not, I will leave to you.

Thx always for your contribution

Let me first reference this comment by saying that I've used watercolors in the past, and I know how difficult it can be.
Are you a watercolor ninja or something? The way you've blended the colors so effortlessly makes me wish I was you. Really. Dead fish and all.

Simple but lovely. I love just about anything that has someone sitting in that position. My tattoo is of a boy sitting in that position. It means so much without saying a word...

I think it's a natural drawing response position. A brooding being. I draw a lot of characters like this too... They've all got something to brood about. Thx for your words

rotemu [2004-02-12 06:07:32 +0000 UTC]

I really love the style of this painting and the colours. The style reminds me a bit of the Moomin illustrations for some reason (which is a Very Good Thing in my book). Maybe it's the simplicity of the face and the hat...
The colours all flow very beautifully into one another.

Watercolours is my favourite media as well (which I have been using too little lately) although the way I use them is less free and more directed.

I think it conveys the mood quite well. I have been feeling a bit like that myself lately. Is there a path off this rock without having to wade with dead fish?

I can most definintely identify with the mood of this piece. I love that you used watercolors for this... acrylics or oils wouldn't have kept the same feeling. The fish are a nice touch, I always love paintings that have parts where you're rewarded for investigating.

Just to let you know... If this were a print and I had money, i'd buy this and put it on my wall.
Since it's not a print, I'll just add it to my favorites and take a look at your gallery

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jaz999 In reply to scun [2004-02-12 14:09:37 +0000 UTC]

I was thinking of using oils for this, but I am pretty bad with that medium, and also, I didn't want to have to wait a month for it to dry. I then thought of only using watercolour for the background, but then i wanted to finish it and it just ended up as is, with a bit of guache for a brighter yellow and white to make the skin less transparent.

I'm flattered that you'd think this worthy of a place on your wall... Maybe one day it'll get around to being posterised and then I'll send you a copy. :}

btw, thx for the and your support

I don't think that 'computer stuff' is cheating (unless you downright go and download a pic, maybe play with it in photoshop and upload here) -I used to do a rather lot of computer drawings... back when our pen mouse still worked... *sob!*

that's bizarre, cos I was going out on a limb when I did that -completely not my style of legs and feet. I've been influenced too much by Anthony Browne, but I thought it fit better than going for realism...

jaz999 In reply to lancekatre [2004-02-12 09:58:58 +0000 UTC]

Yep, it's watercolour with a bit of guache for the hat, as I find watercolours can sometimes appear a bit washed out (a reason I don't usually work in this medium -I have no idea what I was doing with this). Muchos grazias for your comments -oh, and love The Artist comic! People tell me i ought to be doing the same with some of my comic strips, but I dunno. I'm just paranoid J:\ Thx again ~wave~

how bittersweetly beautiful you have such wonderfully crisp lines between your colours, something i could never quite master in my painting quite possibly why i dont submit my paintings here.

i usually hate to comment and fav daily deviations (so much exposure), but i cant help but love this. wonderful job.

jaz999 In reply to sound-corrossion [2004-02-12 09:45:12 +0000 UTC]

er... well, I wouldn't say that I've mastered watercolour either... I'm sure you wouldn't have any problems...

Just keep in mind that a lot of watercolour painters just dab their paintbrushes here and there, and whatever comes out is supposedly good.

just use your pencil rough (hb or softer is best) and burnish it onto your paper and go from there. Use lots of layers until you are satisfied. Oh, and most important is having fun.

Thanks :]

I've sat and stared at this image for such a long time... Saying that this is beautiful isn't enough...maybe a better description would be that it's amazingly and effectively beautiful to me. I find such a strong relationship to the image, and those feelings are greatly magnified by my passion for watercolors and the aspiration to paint at your natural level. Fantastic work.
