Chance is typically emotionally distant, removing himself from the situation at hand and trying to be rational (of course all of this goes right out the window when it comes to Vena, as she somehow draws all of the bottled emotions out of him either intentionally or unintentionally). Towards those he cares about, Chance is more loving and affectionate. Furthermore, if he is going to share his emotions, he's only going to share with one very trusted person (either his mother or Vena, typically the former, he doesn't want Vena to have to deal with/worry about his issues). Chance is also a huge pushover when it comes to Vena.
Dislikes: His feet (there's no particular reason for this either, he just doesn't like them lol), taking off his wedding ring, seeing Vena in any sort of danger/distress, expressing his emotions, being left alone with his thoughts.
Biography: (bless your soul if you actually read all of this)
Chance was born in Aspertia City before it became an official part of Unova. His mother worked at the local pokemon center as a surgeon (surgeons are specialized to take on cases where pokemon are severely injured beyond what the Joy's can deal with. It's a busy job, considering the rate at which pokemon get injured during league challenges). His father was a wandering ace trainer, so it was rare that Chance saw him.
He was a typical kid, asked too many questions, was loud and outgoing, and had no filter. His closest friend was Hugh Warren, who also happened to be his neighbor. The two often fought with each other, engaging in a heated competition to see who was better at a particular skill. Chance rarely won any of them. Then, when Hugh got a pokemon at age 10 way before Chance, Hugh to declare himself the ultimate winner of all their competitions. However, when Joanne's childhood friend, Christina, came to visit and brought along her daughter Piper. Chance and Hugh made a new bet: whoever could become her friend first would be the ultimate winner. Determined not to lose, both of them began bugging Piper, who was more interested in playing with Hugh's younger sister, Maddy. Eventually tired of being annoyed, Piper declared that she was Chance's friend because Hugh was "too annoying and loud." The pair became inseparable after that, until the summer came to an end.
After a few years Chance and Piper kind of forgot about each other, until they met again at the ages of 17 and 15 when Chance and his mother visited Nuvema Town. The reason for the visit was to get chance away from city life, as he was starting to become a delinquent. The two became a couple not long after reconnecting. Chance was pursuing music at this time, wanting to become a rockstar (and he had an attitude and wardrobe to match). Piper wanted to be a trainer, and not just any trainer but the league champion. Chance begged his mom to let him stay in Nuvema with Piper. Joanne reluctantly agreed, and so Chance stayed in there for two years. Within the first year of living in Nuvema, he had gotten Piper (who was 16 at the time) pregnant. This caused a bit of a stir with Christina, as she felt Piper was far too young to be a mother, though she eventually came to accept it if she wanted Piper to stay in her life after the child was born. When Chance was 19 and Piper was 17, they got married. A couple months later their daughter, Lavender, was born. They moved into a small apartment in Accumlua Town. Chance gave up on being a rockstar and got a job at a local pokemart. When Vena was 1 year old, Piper got her trainers license (since being a trainer is a quick way to make money) and left on her journey, sending money home weekly to Chance. Chance was raising Vena alone for a while, with help from Christina who watched Vena while Chance worked.
The day Chance received a call from Alder saying that Piper had died during the Plasma incident was probably the worst day of his life. Only two of her pokemon survived whatever happened at the League, a Liligant named Tigerlily and a Scrafty named Duncan. The two were heavily traumatized, and refused to even speak about the incident so the case remained unsolved. Chance was only 21 when she died and was now a single father to a 2, nearly 3, year old girl. Heartbroken, and now without the support of Christina (who blamed Chance for her daughters death), Chance and Vena moved back to Aspertia to live with Joanne. Chance was deeply depressed, unable to muster much energy for anything except giving attention to Vena. Joanne helped as mich as she could, often taking care of both Chance and Vena. It was Vena who got Chance to get going again, because he wanted to provide her with a good childhood, or at least as good as it could be. He also needed to know what happened to Piper, to provide some sense of closure as nobody knew what happened. He applied for a trainers license and set out with a Snivy named Blythe. Joanne took care of Vena during this time. Facing the resurrected team Plasma, he slowly pieced together what happened to Piper, which was then confirmed by Ghetsis himself. Chance also sent money back home to Joanne and Vena weekly, often including a letter to both of them. Chance beat Plasma, then the League, and went home. He stayed with his mother for six more years, until Vena was 9, and then moved to Kanto to try and be as far away from memories of Piper as possible (even though he still wears his wedding ring and refuses to take it off). Piper's pokemon stayed with Joanne, as they had grown attached to her over the years.
In Celadon City two years later, they became a host family for a foreign exchange student named Maoka Kukui (age 18) who was challenging the Kanto League after finishing his Island Trials in Alola. Vena doesn't really remember the year Kukui spent living with them, as he was gone a lot battling (she has vague memories of meeting new pokemon she had never known about before, but thinks it was a dream or something she saw on TV). Chance and Kukui became fast friends, Chance gave him pointers on League battles and Kukui helped him joke around and have a little fun. Chance often teased Kukui about knocking because Kukui has a bad habit of just barging in wherever he goes. Chance still teases him about that to this day. Chance sees Kukui as a younger brother of sorts, and has stayed in contact with him even after Kukui went home to Alola. Chance, after growing tired of city life, decided to move to Alola with the now 18 year old Vena. He bought a spacious house (Kukui looked at the house for him and gave him the okay, since Chance was unable to visit Alola at the time) and officially moved into it a month or so before the main story of Riptide begins.
