Xiu Li is a 16-year old water bender from one of the Southern Tribes. She and her older sister Zan both live with their aunt Thi Lien, a kind and gracious woman who cared for them when their mother died from an illness whilst their father had gone off to war. Xiu had a relatively easy life, but was constantly overshadowed by her older sister Zan who was beautiful and good at everything she does. Many people refer to Xiu as ‘Zan’s little sister’, which annoys Xiu because she knows how popular her sister is with the tribe and as such feels inadequate. Lucky for Xiu, Zan does love and support her little sister, despite getting all the attention. Before their mother died, Zan made a promise to look after Xiu and since then has not gone back on her promise.

When Xiu was only 12, a fire nation troop raided and destroyed her clan, she and Zan survived but were shortly captured and sold separately into slavery. Xiu was purchased by an overbearing fire nation tea house manager to work as a maid, which was quite fortunate for Xiu since most girls, usually ones as beautiful as Zan, were sold to brothels or worse. After enduring 2 years of slaving in the kitchen and beatings from her superiors, Xiu mustered whatever spirit she had left and stabbed her sleeping master to death with a stolen kitchen knife before making her escape aboard a cargo ship. Afterwards Xiu spent months living on the streets, scraping for whatever food she could find to survive, before she eventually decided to avenge her clan and set off to find an instructor to teach her martial arts and improve her water bending skills. Sometime later Xiu learned that her sister Zan may still be alive and decided to go and rescue her. Along the way she befriends Kippei an overconfident fun loving Earth Bender, Shang the youngest of the group and Kippei’s little brother, Hanae a stoic japanese child sorceress and her companion Eun Sai, a talking hokkien-noodle-obsessed and perverted rabbit who was actually once a famous martial artist (he had a curse placed on him by a Fire Nation witch in disguise).
