Description This is just an experiment! I was messing around with PS to see what other effects I could achieve. Airbrushing, cell-shading (which I fail miserably at), gradients, smudging, blurring, dodging, burning, filtering, and manipulating various brushes were the things I tried out. Overall this pic took 3 hours! And all on the one layer! Would someone PLEASE point out a tutorial on how to use layers!! It’d be much appreciated!

In the end it was too pretty to be placed in scraps, so I decided to feature it as a deviation.

The coloring is very nice ^^
I can't believe you did all of this on one layer O.o That's, like, artist torture, seriously.
Okay, so basically, everything wants to be on its own layer. If you were to do this picture again with layers, the hair might be on its own layer. Then the shirt on another, same with the bottoms, and you would even consider doing two layers for the purple and black. Lastly, the misc. things, like the bandages, maybe the shines. The bg looked like torture o.O. I would have to say the butterflies on one, the grass on another, the sky on one, and maybe a seperate one for clouds. Trust me, it'll be much easier!
By the way, what tool did you use for the shadings?

Eh...that's the problem. I don't know how to operate layers for nuts

It's easy, just click on the "New Layer" button everytime you want a new layer ^^

Aww, i wish i could help! I know, personally, how to use layers... but i wouldn't know where to start on a proper tutorial. If it helps, i think you did a good job on coloring her. Very loverly.

But i think i'll do a clothing tutorial sometimes soon, though i doubt you're interested.

Thanks

If you do choose to do a tutorial, I think you'd certainly
be helping other novice PS users out there.

GreenEyedBrunette In reply to JBarnzi88 [2008-01-03 18:10:22 +0000 UTC]

Ha, thanks. I really appreciate that. I just don't know how i would explain how to use layers, it's something i learned on my own.

And i don't us PS, lol, i use Corel Painter. xD But Layers is a concept in almost all digital art programs, save some oekakis'.

But, honestly, in your opinion, what type of things do people need the most help in? Like, so if i do make a tutorial it would help more.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JBarnzi88 In reply to GreenEyedBrunette [2008-01-03 21:41:46 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'd say people would want to know how to arrange their layers, where what button for this layer is, duplicate, name them (eg, skin, hair, eyes), etc. I'm no expert but that was from what I've learned from several tuts.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GreenEyedBrunette In reply to JBarnzi88 [2008-01-03 22:35:18 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I'll look into it. Honestly though, i don't think alot of people use Corel Painter.. but i could be wrong. I'll see what i can do. If i do submit a tutorial it'll probably be in about a month or two then. I have art to submit for compatitions and apparently a book. xDD So i'll have to see.

GreenEyedBrunette In reply to JBarnzi88 [2008-01-04 00:52:55 +0000 UTC]

Naw, i do want to do one. I've wanted to for a while, i just wanted to wait until my art got a little better. And since i've been submitting some digital works lately, and i've gotten some good responses, i do want to.

But thanks anyways, i apprectiate it.

For only one layer of work, you've done an amazing job at your work!

It's hard to describe photoshop layering, but if someone could show you hands on, it's so easy to use ^_^ Thats how I learned. Tutorials never helped, until I got someone who showed it to me personally. Perhaps have a good friend who knows how, show it through video? I dunno...

Any who! The artwork itself is great as always. I use layers, and I find cell-shading the easiest manner of shading personally ^_^

If you need any assistance of questions, let me know too, I don't ever mind helping people, though there are others much better then me at Photoshop you can ask

I suppose I'm more of a 'show-me-that-in-person'.
Being aspergic I prefer to do things practically instead of
simply being 'told', in other words I have to actually 'see' it done
before I get the idea of what I have to do.

rosychan [2008-01-03 00:16:09 +0000 UTC]

O_o have you always been operating on one layer? ouch.

usual construction is: background on the bottom layer. lineart on the top layer (with NOTHING but lineart on that layer, no white filler) and colours in betweeeeen ~ this way your colours wont ever touch your lineart

you can select the areas you want to fill on your lineart layer with the magic wand tool, and once you have selections, alt+backspace to fill in your colour on a separate colour layer.

i like to have one layer per colour, and when you're ready to shade, lock the layer so you cant colour outside of it. =]

sorry it's not a proper tutorial.. lol thats just how i do it

aha i forgot this, this tutorial is mainly for cellshading but the explains the layers and using them really well although here they have white filler on their lineart, so you only need to set your lineart layer to 'multiply' mode if there's white on it too.

It does take a while to learn but the principles are actually simple.

I suggest you study and test out various parts of photoshop, with the help of tutorials here on DA, and shortly you'll be creating beautiful works too.
