Thank you so much!! this is the most helpful tutorial I've seen on the subject ; ) Nice shoes--love your whole gallery. You make it look nice and easy, and thanks for the pencil thing. Everyone said that pencil wouldn't show up if I tried to sketch it out on the shoe first--but clearly, you're amazing

hey , I've been checking your gallery & videos lately. Are the paints waterproof? If they are waterproof then why do you use waterproof & stain shield sprays? It would be great to hear from you!

I use to use the spray shields because I was using markers. Now i use acrylic paint which requires no shield but if you want the shoes extra protected, now I use varnish

i want a very colorful abstract thing with like blended shades more of the cool colors like purple, blue, and green, but still rainbow. how do i pay for these shoes 0.o. Kinda like maybe a tree pattern like you have coming out around the triangle on one of your shoes. but still and abstract pattern please.

Do you know of a certain spray that is best to help waterproof it as much as possible?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Jboogieman In reply to MaryOfExeter [2011-05-05 15:57:39 +0000 UTC]

I cannot say what is the best but an acrylic varnish is probably one of the best ways to protect the artwork.

Jboogieman In reply to MaryOfExeter [2011-05-13 23:25:40 +0000 UTC]

If you use a spray do thin layers and about 4 should be pretty good. but I would recommend that you use an acrylic varnish and brush on a layer then let that dry completely and then another layer on top just to be safe

I am feeling really down now because it's the dateline to submit the shoes today and I MISSED it!!!!
Only myself to blame. Due to my poor time management and over-confidence. The shoes are 50% done (painted) only. I tried using markers at first but realized that I can't get the colors I want so I switched to acrylic paints for the very first time. It's good to use acrylic paints because I can mix the colors until I get the right ones that I want. But the downside is that acrylic paints dry out really very quickly (like after 1 minute), and it will become a big lump and almost not usable. So re-mixing the colors took almost half of the time (pardon me I'm first-time user).

I will post and show you the pictures of the shoes I've painted using this tutorial when I am done. But I guess I will not be able to use the paints until I've found out how to prevent them from drying so quickly. Could you please enlighten me? Thank you so much

im sorry to hear that you weren't able to finish. well there are some things to help with painting, you can water down the paint which will take longer to dry or you can use a medium called retarder which slows the drying time of the paint quite significantly. Other than that its just practice. you may also want to try to paint small portions of the shoes at a time.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

aintnoevil In reply to Jboogieman [2011-05-01 02:31:52 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for your enlightenment. I will try the retarder, and I guess you're right that only practice makes perfect. After all, painting shoes is not easy at all. It really takes expertise and experience to do it well. I hope I can finish the shoes asap so that I can show u & share with everyone (although I have the slightest confidence about it)

Thank you for your helpful tutorial as I am going to try this for the first time. I am going to participate in the Converse shoe design contest (Singapore). Very nervous and scary I must say, not knowing what it will look like. But hopefully I will do well after reading your tutorial and I will post the picture when done. Cheers!

I see, the shoes that you made are fantastic. I hope that I can get mine done well too. Can you please advise me which should I use for coloring? Markers (Faber Castle) or Acrylic paints? I hope to achieve vibrant and smooth colors when finished. For now, I just started to sketch with pencil. Feel so nervous as I have to submit the completed painted shoes by coming Friday (22 April) for the contest

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Jboogieman In reply to aintnoevil [2011-04-17 03:36:56 +0000 UTC]

well you can always try marker first and if you do not like the look, you can paint over the work you don't want. I like acrylic better since you can mix colors and everything is quite smooth. Hope this helps! and good luck!

Brilliant work there mate! I'm actually in love to your shoes... I'm planning to make my own custom shoes but i'm not exactly sure about where should I start. :/ How good is a marker and pen made stuff like yours for heavy wear? I mean, can I wash it without ruining the art on it? Or can I use it a LOT without blending? Because If I can't maybe I should try to work with paint. :/ I read that its more reliable and almost indestructuble. What do you think? I'm really really lost you must help pls pls HALP!

Jboogieman In reply to Vertigo-one [2011-04-05 04:40:39 +0000 UTC]

okay drawing and painting on shoes is just like everything else. markers do fade and can bleed if wet. So i recommend using acrylic paint and when you are done with the painting you can either brush on a varnish or use a spray varnish. acrylic paint is definitely better for ware and tear but I would NOT ever wash the shoes. I never have but you can clean the souls and make them all white using acetone and a rag. any more questions?

Thank you very much Any acrilyc paint would be good for this?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Jboogieman In reply to Vertigo-one [2011-04-05 22:49:55 +0000 UTC]

you may want to test the acrylic on a piece of fabric or canvas to see if the fabric can bend without the paint cracking. decent acrylic should not have any problem.
