A very nice scene. The dark clouds over restless water.
The scene is a good one however there is a bit of a problem. Due to the dark landscape and bright sky, the exposure is not entirely even.
The sky is a bit over exposed and the foreground is a bit under exposed. It draws the attention away from what you wished to show us.
This is a good photo and could have been great with the use of an ND grad filter.
The composition of this photo is very nice, and I think that this good photo could be awesome with the right tools.
A good photo, thank you for sharing it with us e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Big Grin)"/>

Thank you very much for your critique!

It's very helpful to me in understanding where my images fail and where they succeed.

I usually use composite techniques to get round dynamic range problems offered by sunset scenes without grad ND filters, I didn't use any in this shot though, and the sky is a bit burned.

The foreground is exposed properly in the original, it was darkened in PP. Your comment that it's too dark has been noted.

Once I have some time I might try to correct this in PS and upload a revised version.

Again, thank you very much!

First of all, I only gave my opinion on your photo.
I personally create high dynamic range photos to compensate. I think my critique was based on the idea that by using a grad filter you could keep a lot of the motion you captured in the water.
I think you shoot awesome photos, and went through quite a few before I picked one to critique. The one I critiqued was good, but the rest of your photos are great.
I just wanted to give you my opinion on how to make this photo reach the same level as the rest of your photos from similar scenery.
I'm very glad you enjoyed reading my humble opinion. I am not a professional photographer, but I do enjoy photography and I learn at least as much from writing critiques as you learned from reading it.
Quite simply because writing it made me think of what I like and what I think could be better as well as what I like in your other photos.

Thank you so much for your kind response to my critique. I really do hope to see more photos of this type from you, quite simply because you do them so well.

Thank you very much for your kind words!

I used to write a lot of critiques on another website and it's a great way to learn and develop an eye for things. Unfortunately I don't have much time these days for critiquing, all my spare time goes to taking photos or processing them.

I uploaded a revised image inspired by some of your critique, mainly about the sky: :thumb291098147:

Wow that is quite the difference
Awesome!

I myself have written a lot of critiques here on the last year quite simply because I have not been inspired to shoot any photos. So I started critiquing. It's only the last few weeks that I have picked up a camera again after over a year of being away from photography. I really missed it.
So I myself am out of training with the camera and need to get back to where I once was.

Critiquing is fine, but going out to photograph is more important.

Just go out for long walks, inspired or not.

Hehe I bring my camera anywhere I can. And some times I even buy things I think look pretty that are not to pricey to set up a "studio" here at home

I tried doing the "bring the camera with me" trick, It didn't work for me. Just end up lugging expensive gear around all day.

The only thing that works for me is going out, alone, just me and the camera, for a few hours. Clears your head and you get home with some nice pictures.

I live alone and have no one to worry about so when I go out I go out alone and come back alone with pictures some good most not so good

My keep/delete ration is 1 to 10 I think on average.

I consider any trip a good trip if there is at least one photo I can post on dA. Just one photo, that's enough.

I keep pretty much 1 of 50 photos I shoot if I have a good day.

But I do shoot lots of HDRs and have started shooting with lensbabies so till I get a hang of the lensbabies and bird photography I'll be working my way back down to keeping 1 of 50

Well 1 in 50 is fine if you shoot HDRs, every scene is 3-9 exposures

I have no experience with lensbabies. But I'll probably try them one day.

What I love about photography is that there is no limit to new toys you can play with to make it interesting.

David Bailey (a famous photographer) once said "It takes a lot of imagination to be a good photographer. You need less imagination to be a painter because you can invent things. But in photography everything is so ordinary; it takes a lot of looking before you learn to see the extraordinary."
To me that quote sums up a lot of what I love about photography.
That and as you say all the toys one can play with

And it gets me out of the house. That counts for something too.
