Description Still digging through what little unposted art I have on my flash drive, and I found this Looney Tunes group shot from a couple of years ago. I drew this around the time when Space Jam was just starting to re-emerge in the public consciousness as some sort of cult classic film, and since the Looney Tunes are obviously so near and dear to me, I kicked around the idea of doing a "fix fic" of sorts for the movie. This would have been part of the promo image for it. But of course, I've never had time to work on any of my elaborate fanfiction ideas, so this one fell by the wayside pretty quickly.

I have a real love-hate relationship with Space Jam. On the one hand, it was a major cinematic experience for my nine year old self in 1996. On the other hand, it's probably one of the dumbest Looney Tunes projects ever made. But on the other other hand, watching it again as an adult, it's so unrelenting in its stupidity that it actually becomes enjoyably bad. It's such a perfect snapshot of mid-90s corporate idiocy - "Hey, you know those Nike commercials with Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny that everyone liked? Let's make a movie out of those! With aliens!" It's a train wreck that you can't help looking at, even though you know you're going to regret it as soon as you do.

Nice group shot! And I agree with your appraisal of Space Jamβ€”a movie so bad it makes LT: Back In Action look good. The saddest thing about SJ?… the effort and attention the movie took to create Lola Bunny, and then do NOTHING with her.

I felt like the only one who actually likes the newer Lola and the new Looney Tunes show in general. Also, I did have plans for my friends and I for making a RiffTrax for this film, but ultimately, it never went through. But, yeah it was a really stupid film. (BUNNY BOOBIES)

Β A lot of younger viewers actually like the newer Lola. I think TLTS was aimed more for middle school and early high school and I was around that age when it came out.

Probably one of the dumbest? I think Brendan Fraser and Jenna Elfman would disagree.

I liked it because it's an extremely unorthodox concept. And silliness is at the heart of many Looney TunesΒ  cartoons.

One criticism of Space Jam that always bugged me was Chuck Jones'. He said the idea of Bugs Bunny needing help from anyone was ridiculous since he always whupped the bad guys in shorts. But there were plenty of times when other characters he faced of against had him pegged, like the airplane gremlin. Plus, Bugs Bunny was made by Tex Avery. Jones wrote for the character, meaning his interactions and attitudes were open to his interpretation. And he did amazing with his writing and directing of the Looney Tunes cast, but talking like he invented them is a little arrogant.

All in all, your reasons for disliking it are valid, though I think it was an interesting story for kids to not annoy their parents for 90 minutes.

Oh yeah, as much as I dislike Space Jam, I loathe Looney Tunes: Back in Action. That movie just sits on my head and crushes it.

Chuck Jones, for all his accomplishments, had one hell of a big fuckin' ego on him, especially in the latter half of his career. It's no wonder he and Michael Maltese had a falling out. I know he hated Who Framed Roger Rabbit too, saying it was an insult and stuff like that, though I suspect that may have partly been sour grapes 'cause Richard Williams didn't use any of his gag ideas.

Exactly, cause Jordan making the last shot was too obvious, Lmaooo Jordan could still be part of the final shot but I think him shooting it up since he has no where to go with the Monstars so heavily guarding him, and seeing everybody thinks it wasn't gone make it in, but he tries his best, either Lola, Bugs, or Daffy dunk that b---h inside xD in slow motion ctfu. That would of been SO fly xD they could of done so much more with the characters it's disappointing and I hate being a film maker cause I find ways I could improve movies in MY versions xD.

Space Jam is a pretty terrible feature-length commercial. But it at least kind of remembers what Bugs and the other LT characters do best. It's not the complete betrayal the Tom and Jerry movie was.

At the very least, Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner don't talk, and don't sing about the joys of friendship.

To be honest i actually love this film, yeah it has it's flaws and everything but I wouldn't really consider it a bad movie. If anything, Looney Tunes: Back In Action was worse. I mean yeah it got mixed reviews, mostly negative, but it was a box office success, not to mention the soundtrack was certified Platinum by RIAA.Β

These days I kind of think of Space Jam almost as the "Kingdom Hearts of the 90's": both are unusually random crossover concepts that I really only like for Looney Tunes and Disney more than I care about Michael Jordan or Final Fantasy characters (I bet if the movie was just about Michael Jordan and basketball, I would have had zero interest). As a kid I always saw it as the big feature film outing of Bugs Bunny and company that wasn't just a compilation of shorts, but honestly, it really just feels like the movie's about Michael and they're only there to make him look cooler when he's surrounded by iconic cartoon stars.

I won't lie by saying that I don't still have some nostalgic soft spot for this movie, but I would definitely recommend the classic Warner Bros. cartoons as an introduction to the Looney Tunes before I'd recommend Space Jam. I'd even recommend Roger Rabbit first, since it's clearly the superior of the two live-action/animation hybrids.

jbwarner86 In reply to mariods [2015-05-31 14:12:57 +0000 UTC]

My idea was to flip it around - instead of it being a biopic of Michael Jordan, make it more about Bugs Bunny. Show him in Hollywood instead of Looney Tune Land, retiring to his palatial Beverly Hills hole in the ground after wrapping the second Hare Jordan commercial in 1992, and then the Nerdlucks swoop in and try to take him and his costars prisoner. Michael Jordan can still be part of the plot, but as an old showbiz acquaintance of Bugs' from the Nike commercials instead of some cross-dimensional real world celebrity who gets sucked into cartoon land.

And Lola can still be there too, but since everyone complains (and rightfully so) about her lack of "looneyness", I had the idea to push those aspects into the realm of parody, where she shows up as a stone-faced embodiment of "girl power" who attempts to give a super-feminist shot in the arm to Bugs' antiquated 1940s attitude of "eh, dames, am I right?" She resists being slapsticky and goofy throughout most of the movie, trying to be serious and "badass" the whole time, until she finally gives in during the climactic moments of the big game and starts dishing out the over-the-top Bob Clampett-style cartoon hurt to the Monstars left and right, because there's absolutely nothing wrong with a female character doing something like that

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

mariods In reply to jbwarner86 [2015-05-31 14:27:20 +0000 UTC]

I love those ideas. In fact, the way Bugs would be more a main character instead of Jordan would be so sweet (we can forget all the ankward moments with Jordan's family and the boring moments with him and the Beisball team) and Lola making her way with that attitude would have given an interesting point to her debut in the movie. I always saw Lola as a character who could have been more "toony" and funny if she tried to be more like Babs Bunny and less like Jessica Rabbit. The idea of Space Jam is dumb and crazy, but that crazyness can be the key to a very funny movie in the other way. In my oppinion, the real problem with the movie was that it didn't take the risk to be all the crazy it could have been in the first place. And to waste a real good moment with Bill Murray and the Looney wich could have been mooooore long and witty. XD

(Sorry for the possible misspellings, I'm a spanish guy trying to talk in a medium-level english). XD

jbwarner86 In reply to mariods [2015-05-31 14:39:55 +0000 UTC]

Yes - not taking risks was a huge problem with Space Jam. It's definitely a movie made by committee, which never works for the Looney Tunes. It tried to replicate the wacky end results of the gag sessions from Termite Terrace without taking the proper steps to get there. And what's worse, it's trying to balance that with telling a fictionalized account of Michael Jordan's life story and vainly trying to appeal to what was "cool" in popular culture at the time (all the outer space alien invasion stuff). The end result is a cold, calculated mess of a film, where the only laughter comes from your disbelief that anyone thought it could have worked.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

mariods In reply to jbwarner86 [2015-05-31 17:50:40 +0000 UTC]

Indeed. It worked as a blockbuster in its moment because it had all things kids loved in the 90's, but really a simply and analytical viewing destroys all the movie.

(and well, in fact I was one of the kids who enjoyed the movie in its moment and still find it enjoyable as an "guilty pleasure" laughing, as you say, with its bad jokes and "silliness", but that doesn't mean I can, as an adult, find in it a lot of failures and defects). XD

I love the way you draw Looney Tunes. Their poses are so natural and expressive, they look like they came right out of the old boob-tube. It's a shame the inking and colouring is so bland; with the right digital touch-ups and a background to match, this pic would really shine.

I used to love Space Jam, before I found out that it was a fictional biopic for Michael Jordan.

Really, the whole concept of making the Looney Tunes play second fiddle to a live-action player doesn't make sense. Bugs Bunny was a cultural icon before Michael Jordan was even born, and he will still be an icon long after Jordan is dead and buried.

Good thing I checked my messages; this piece was soon added to my faves.

Space Jam never really sparked my interests.Β  I was never really into basketball (despite the town I grew up in), the whole concept just feel kinda cheesy to me (even as a kid), and if I'm going to be completely honest, I never liked that song, which still makes me twitch and cringe whenever I hear even part of it.

....Although I did enjoy some of the Lola segments in the DC Looney Tunes comic books.

Yeah, just add the movie and the impact on the Looney Tunes franchise to the list of things that result in my Love-Hate relationship with Warner Brothers.
