Description "If you don't like your job, you don't strike! You just go in every day and do it really half-assed. That's the American way!"
-- Homer Simpson, 2F19 "The PTA Disbands!"

With the WGA strike still driving a stake through the heart of network television, I began thinking about how FOX's three animated shows ("The Simpsons", "Family Guy", and "American Dad") are probably going to take the longest to feel any sort of squeeze as the result of the empty writing rooms, given how far in advanced they're produced. Still, if this thing lasts much longer, even those shows are bound to run out of episodes.

Years ago, when I was in high school, I tried to flex my comedy writing skills by utilizing the Simpsons characters in their own comic strip. Looking back at them, they weren't perfect, but after studying the show extensively on DVD, I now feel I have a strong enough grasp of the characters' personalities to utilize them in original stories again. And what better subject to tackle than one that the show's writers themselves probably see nothing funny about whatsoever?

Perfect Simpsons humour right there. Not to mention you're good at drawing the characters.

I hope the strike is settled this week or next now that talks with the WGA and AMPTP are back in session after the December 7, 2008 break down.

I hope The Simpsons hires scab writers if the WGA strike is a long one, or possibly do a few new Fall 2008 episodes that are remakes of 1987-1989 Simpsons Tracey Ullman show skits!

I honestly don't think that'd be a good idea at all. I'd rather have Season 20 get postponed a few months instead of having it start on time with inexperienced writers at the helm. And besides, how the heck would you stretch out the Tracey Ullman shorts to 22 minutes?

A complimation I guess.

That doesn't change the fact that the caliber of the writing has changed dramatically since the Tracey Ullman years. Having the characters go through these one-minute adventures all over again without any new writing would be jarring - if you recall, during that era, Homer was a brainless rage machine, Lisa was just as bratty as Bart, and Marge was so nondescript that she didn't even have a name yet.

No, the best thing for the show would be to wait until the strike is resolved. As it stands, after Season 19 finishes up, there'll be seven remaining KABFxx episodes left to hold over until Season 20. Presuming that FOX continues the trend of showing three episodes in September, taking October off for the World Series, and running the remaining four holdovers during November sweeps, that'd give the series until December to get to the LABFxx line. Given the nine month advance schedule that the show works on, if the strike sees a resolution by March or before, the show should still be relatively on schedule.

What's bad about all of this are the people caught in the middle, the techs, set builders, wardrobe, make-up etc.....etc..... they're out of a job and worse, they will get no benefit out of any agreement that is made.

Heh, nice comic. It does seem like something from the show...Personally, the writer's strike bugs me, 'cause it puts a damper on good tv shows. When the writers and the companies are at it, we, the everyday folks, are the ones who suffer.
...But don't mind me, I'm just a little bitter and jaded about certain things.

Homer looks thinner but other then that this is a great comic.
You should email this to Matt Groening if you can find a way, I'm sure he'll love.

Ha! This is fantastic. I could really imagine a dialogue just like this in the show.

I was really hoping that the Golden Globes fiasco would be the last straw, and the WGA would finally have their demands met. Guess it goes to show just how ridiculous Hollywood can be.

Aside from the fact that fanart is generally more popular anyway, I'm still going to have to say that I really love this.

I wasn't aware of the writers strike but I think you've captured the look and personality of the characters stupendously. I was actually reading them in my head with the appropriate voices and it was just like watching the cartoon!

IN FACT, there's the solution to the writers strike! We know their voices so well now we don't need them!

That's probably the best laugh I got from The Simpsons, and it wasn't even done by the cast or crew.

I tell you what, should this strike go any longer, you really ought to try and apply for some part-time work on the Simpsons, comic and/or TV. It's clever stuff like this that ought to be used, 'specially with your talent and know-how. Oh, and extra points for including the Simpsons-based text font.

I remember the official Simpsons comic strip....it wasn't that great. Simpsons comics as a whole lack something the actual TV version has....like the equivalent of taking home part of a restaurant dinner and microwaving it. Somehow part of the flavor escapes.

I once made a Simpsons comic strip as well....back in second grade, when the show had barely been on for two months. I only did about five or seven. One comes to mind where Bart is banging on a new set of drums that say "BART" on them, and Marge is in the corner covering her ears and screaming "I WANT MY MONEY BACK!!" Eighteen seasons later, the real Bart got a drum set.

I fear that there maybe no Simpsons season set this year, or only one. If the WGA strike continues into June, we may not get another Simpsons DVD this year until around December, if at all.

Hey there. Thanks for sharing this with us. :-D I have to admit that it's a great comic. Admittedly, I'm moderately indifferent about the writer's strike (since most of the television I watch these days is off of DVD anyway), but I can DEFINITELY see where it would be a major blow to the television industry, so kudos. :-D

The newest Family Guy was supposedly the season finale.

Still, it's terribly stupid that the FG writers would blame FOX's airing their "close-enough" episodes without Seth's permission for their own mediocre writing.

This is a pretty good comic. If it's one thing I hope for when the strike ends is better stories from all my favorite shows.

Ahmen.

Hey Yeldar and JB, what do you think of American Dad? Personally I feel it's much better than most of the current Family Guy episodes. Maybe all the goodness of the older Family Guy episodes has gleamed on to its sister show, which is American Dad has fantastic stories, characters and gags when Family Guy is mediocre in all of those fields.

Yeldarb86 In reply to JFP [2008-01-17 04:08:17 +0000 UTC]

I've thought the same for a while. American Dad even has a lot of the same production staff that was on Family Guy's classic seasons.

I loved American Dad's James Bond parody far better than FG's overrated Star Wars parody.

There was a "Simpsons" comic strip in the late '90s, but it was weekly instead of daily and it was written and drawn by the same staff that does the "Simpsons" comic books. Matt Groening didn't have any input on it as far as I know, although I believe he still draws "Life in Hell".

FractiousLemon In reply to jbwarner86 [2008-01-15 02:34:09 +0000 UTC]

Ah, okay. If it was done by the same staff as the comic books, then he probably still had a hand in it. He's involved in the Bongo comics as well as the Simpsons and Futurama cartoons.
