Description This entire image was drawn, including the tape, paper, and background mat board. It's 16 x 12 and rendered with charcoal , carbon, and graphite pencils. Charcoal for the mat background, and carbon and graphite for the other elements. The drawing is an illustration of the conundrum about the chicken and the egg, but I have included and additional visual paradox that adds to t he riddle. At the bottom of the picture, the pencil breaks the plane of the paper, making it appear to be taped to the drawing. However, the top of the pencil includes a cast shadow that follows the plane of the wooden ledge. This gives the impression that the pencil is taped to the wood in the image..

so... dumb question probably:
do you draw the drawings you then render in the final piece (i.e. in this case did you draw the chicken on the lined paper, stick a pin in it on top of white paper... then draw that piece of paper with the drawing, pin etc?)... or are you just so used to doing this you can fabricate it as you go along without that level of reference?

I use a reference meaning I set up most of the still life and draw from life. However, I draw from the background forward. The small piece of paper with the chicken was the last thing to render. I hope that answers your question.

At first I was like ಠ_ಠ this is not so impressive, then I reazlied the whole thing was part of the drawing and I was like... omg.. words cant describe it. So much detail in the contrast and perfect scale/proportions. Just perfect.

Thanks for the comments.
The hardest part about this one was drawing a white piece of paper on top of a white piece of paper.
