Description I don't normally take pictures of the train so far away, but I just knew these two were gonna get the cops called on them. HOW DUMB CAN TWO PEOPLE BE TO STAND ON THE TRACKS THAT A TRAIN IS COMING ON??? They left right after they took their pictures, and 15 minutes later a railroad cops comes up and starts yelling at me for this, I showed him the incriminating photo's and I got off the hook....what a day.

Doesn't surprise me. I've seen people in my town use the railroad tracks as a shortcut even though they aren't supposed to be there in the first place.

I have seen this same scene repeated many times. I have also witnessed rail photographers setting up tripods or lay on live tracks just so they can get that "shot”. These are the types of photographers that ruin for the honest photographers. I come from the east near Philadelphia. I can tell you many railroad security stories. Law enforcement officers have a zero tolerance level for trespassing on railroad property and rightly so. If they have the opportunity, and you’re trespassing, you will either get chomped on by a canine cop dog, tazzed or even worse, shot at. Thank you for submitting this excellent example of this type of unlawful photography, as shown in your image that should be an arrestable offence.

Love the title, so appropriate. I have one word for those guys: TELEPHOTO. Now, I'll admit I've been too close to the tracks before, but ON them?! That's just asking for it.

The fact of the matter is, there are two types of people who are railfans, the sensible type and the madman, the latter of which can be seen breaking into freight yards, crossing live lines, and in the case of one guy with a video on Youtube, accessing a live main line with trains passing at speeds of up to 100mph, and walking up the side of said line to get a lineside video of a steam locomotive operating a railtour. In the past, people have been known to cross barriers and gates at pedestrian crossings when a railtour is going past, and stand facing the train, right in the middle of the second line, with their back turned to oncoming traffic.

These guys look as though they were taking photos of, and noting down, wagon numbers and consist listings, but the excuse of "I really need this one number for my archive" isn't enough to not be branded irresponsible and a downright fool. It's the brain dead like these idiots that make life harder for the rest of us...

I love it when the bulls get railfans harmlessly taking photos, but not the two morons walking in front of a freight train.

This is what I read from a British Newspaper And to tell You the truth he's completely correct on this statement:

"The sad thing is if he did get hit and killed by the train...

a) the papers would be full of his family saying things like "he was a good lad really" and "he didn't know it was dangerous, there were no signs saying so" and

b) his family would now be trying to sue the railways for "allowing him to gain access to the tracks in a dangerous manner" and "trains should have safety devices to detect people walking on the tracks".

That's what a large chunk of society expects these days!"

Did the cop even take a hint of what the subjects were wearing?

nope. One time I did something (had my tripod too close to the tracks) and the hogger called the NS police on me, I heard it over my scanner and I left, my friend who was railfanning with me, didnt get questioned when the cop came 15 minutes later, its possible its because of a description.

A few years back here in New Jersey, they had to "Wipe" off some dumb ass off the front of and commuter coming back from NY City. Had and arm and a bit of body left, so they could tell it was a guy.

That sounds like the norm here in NJ.

I remember hearing about a railtour here in the UK that got stopped when there were so many photographers standing inside the boundary fence the driver refused to proceed. And I dont blame him in the least. Personally I look for fences I can push the lens through but stay the safe side of, or level crossing where you can legitimately stand by the side of the tracks. Frankly Im not stupid enough to put myself between several hundred tons of speeding metal and where it needs to go...

It's a good thing you had that nice boarding platform in the foreground to prove that you were standing on public property! This picture defines the difference between railfans and foamers...
