whenever I see this kind of shot I always think of it as the equivalent of a car drifting lol

How fast must one be doing to reach that point?

jdmimages In reply to xjoewhitex [2008-09-13 02:37:00 +0000 UTC]

From what I read it is actually caused by a low pressure area forming during high-g, subsonic maneuvers, in humid conditions. I basically stole that explanation, but it seemed to explain it best.

Hope this helps a little.

I always thought that was the pressure of breaking the sound barrier? lol

That causes a similar effect, yes. Breaking the sound barrier makes kind of a cloud-lookin' thing form on the front of the air craft in a cone shape. In the movie Iron Man, he breaks the sound barrier at one point and you can see it.

I've also seen a few pictures of MiG's doing that, but I can't remember where .

That is insane, you gotta have some crazy fast hand for that

He is really not going that fast. At this point in the turn a lot of energy is lost. But the high-G load, in humid air will cause this.

I see. Ive seen pics of them when they break the sound barrier and that would be an amazing picture to capture. Can i ask you where you took this?

You got it brother...if you ever get any good shots of H-6o Sikorski types awk Blackhawks, that would be great as they were my ride back in the 90s
