Both are iconic spiky-haired optimistic warriors who love adventure and have really similar "Super" transformations that massively increases their power while turning their hair/fur golden and giving them a golden glow (Super Sonic and Super Saiyan respectively).

Both are free-spirited, easy-going, and adventurous.
They're close friends with tech geniuses (Tails and Bulma) are the protectors of seven mythical and powerful artifacts that are often pursued by their stories' antagonists (Chaos Emeralds and Dragon Balls respectively).

They end up meeting rival characters who're the last of their kind that live on floating structures in the skies (Knuckles and Piccolo), with said characters originating from cultures that are related to aforementioned objects, and were introduced as a villain to tooth Sonic and Goku, but would later become allies to them to join them in fighting greater threats.

They would also meet up with aggressive, arrogant, and powerful black haired anti-heroes with blunt demeanors who originally served as their rivals and enemies (Shadow and Vegeta respectively). These antiheroes originally had plans of destroying Earth and sought to obtain the power of seven magical gemstones for their personal gain (the Dragon Balls and the Chaos Emeralds, respectively), but later changed their ways and grew to be one of Earth's strongest defenders instead, even heroically sacrificing themselves once before later revealing to still be alive.

They would also meet mysterious characters that come from the future to prevent cataclysmic events (Silver and Trunks).

At some point, the negative energy from the seven powerful objects created new enemies (Chaos and Omega Shenron).
