Our veins.
Our pores.
Our skin,
Breathes.

Materials and Methods
Nikon D80 + Tamron 90mm F2.8 + SB-600. Skeleton leaf from bag of potpourri. GIMP for post editing. Desaturated. Auto-levels. Darkened midtones to reveal more textures. Practicing using the new flash unit.

Additional Comments
Your skin has hairs. Your skin has pores. If it doesn't, then you must have a serious medical condition. But then why does the popular media tell us we should want to look like we have a serious medical condition?

Interesting/weird personal story: First week of college. This guy comes up to me after class and tells me that we're in almost all the same classes. We're walking to our next class together and talking along the way. He tells me he's an international student. I tell him I'm from around the area. He asks me if there are any good places to get food and a haircut. As we reach a point where we have to part and go our separate ways, he leans close to me and says quietly, "You have hair on your face." And walks away. I pause for awhile to process what he had just said. It still confuses me why you would say that to someone you just met. I wonder if it's a cultural thing. Maybe he thought he was doing me a favor by warning me that I missed shaving the hair on my face. But whatever the reason, I never really talked to him again.

I remember finding a leaf like that in my backyard once. It fascinated me for days. It's amazing how, long after the life is gone from something, its structure can remain. Lovely pic.

Excellent! Textures are fascinating. Smoothing out all the details is an awfully strange way to see beauty.

i don't really love the concept of retouching.

what kind of leaf is this?

It's just a leaf from this bag of potpourri. They're commonly referred to as skeleton leaves.

I love this, amazing composition and b&w aside, I love when you can see pores in a photograph. I hate seeing airbrushed and therefore plastic looking skin. SKIN HAS TEXTURE!!

im usually not too huge a fan of black and white, but this works really well.
the symmetry here is beautiful and it think the minimal touching up here is really brave and effective.

Now this is a breath of fresh air. Nice job with the DoF to show off all those luscious textures! Also (to disagree with another commenter), I like the irregularity with your nostril; it does make it pop out more, but it ties nicely into the whole idea of keeping it real.

Cuz people are stupid, they don't want accept that the human has to be human. They want to look like something that they don't are. That's the cost of beauty?.

Beautiful and human photo.

this is awesome!!!!! love the tones, i need to visit your tutorials once im free from UCLA... lol. Come on summer.
I do think the left nostril area through the leaf is a bit contradictory to the right one. its very dark, and stands out. a tad distracting compared to the softness. otherwise, perfection

JeanFan In reply to Kenny-Gulley [2010-05-20 21:56:35 +0000 UTC]

Man when do you guys get off? We've been done for a week

Yeah, the leaf has a few holes in it, so there must've been one where one of my nostrils were
