The external flash is held under the glass jar, which is filled with water. The light from the flash dissipates/refracts through the water for the remaining exposure for this glowing effect. Curious.........it wouldn't work if you don't have an extenal flash to trigger? you can't just hold your hand with the jar over a light source like a very small LED light?
