Description This is a typical example of a Japanese classroom. High School classrooms seem to usually consist of 40 students, who spend a large portion of their day in the same room as teachers move around to the students instead of students moving around to the teachers. Homeroom means a lot more to Japanese students than their American counterparts; the relationships they make and the experiences they have together as a class will be looked back upon fondly for a long time to come.

This looks a lot like the classrooms I went to in junior high school and high school in the 1970s in the United States.  The biggest difference is American classrooms at that time almost always had a big teacher desk at the front of the room.

Oh man I wish my classrooms looked like that, instead classrooms with desks in little clusters, plastic-ass chairs, tiny/no windows, and a carpet.. And the classroom is wider than it is long, and it's tiny af.

Umm.. Hey?
Could I use some of your pictures backgrounds for this visual novel I'm working on (I'm not sure if I'll able to finish it though)? I'm also going to apply some filters... I promise I'll credit you if I really get it done~ OuO

Very interesting!

Yeah because Japanese students are in the same homeroom for their three years of high school they form strong relationships.

LOL! But Japanese school is NOT like anime. There are a lot of differences. Reality is never as cool as fantasy, no matter where you live.

Do those class rooms contain a heating?? I can't see neither pipes for central heating nor for water.. O.o How do you do it in winter?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JeanneABeck In reply to Ranja86 [2009-06-01 13:30:56 +0000 UTC]

Ha ha. Sometime around November they haul in these kerosene stoves from the 30s and attach an exhaust pipe to them that leads out of the room from another pipe in the wall. We take turns getting kerosene from downstairs every morning and dread walking out into the icy hallways. There's no air conditions either so in the summer time all the windows are opened up and we pray for a breeze to pass by. Life as a Japanese high school student is rough. Did I mention the schools look like they're falling apart from the inside?

KitxTsuki [2009-01-14 03:26:27 +0000 UTC]

Wow, it's really not as different as any other school's set up. Well the moving around is qute different but the set up of the classroom and whatnot. Don't students have to wear a different pair of shoes before entering the classroom?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JeanneABeck In reply to KitxTsuki [2009-01-16 23:50:44 +0000 UTC]

No, once you're in the school and changed into your indoor shoes you should be ok anywhere. The only exception I can think of is our CALL room (Computer Assisted language lab) that's brand new and carpeted. I think the kids have separate sandals for that, but I just walk around there in my socks.

JeanneABeck In reply to Acho101 [2009-01-16 23:51:29 +0000 UTC]

It's no problem. I enjoy having my desk in an office where kids have to come and see me if they want me.

Acho101 In reply to JeanneABeck [2009-01-17 01:19:54 +0000 UTC]

I would have to say that not having to worry about keeping a room clean and having to all way take thing on and off the walls does sound nice.
