The New Marshallese Republic is by far the smallest nation on Mars in terms of area and population, however their history is just as rich as other nations on Mars. The Marshallese people originated from the Marshall Islands, where destructive battles in World War II were fought and where nuclear testing from the United States occurred. The Marshall Islands gained independence from the United States in 1979, however this did not end the hardships of the Marshallese people. During the 21st century, rising sea levels and climate change slowly sank the islands and made them completely uninhabitable by 2090. The United States created a reservation for the Marshallese in Southern California for Marshallese refugees, however they lived in poverty as most people from the Marshall Islands lost everything and there was limited economic potential on the reservation. After the Great Disasters following 2110, life on Earth became drastically harsher and many sought to move to Mars where they could build a new future. Among those hoping for the chance to explore the new frontier were the Marshallese. In 2125, the president of the Marshallese Reservation with the backing of the Marshallese people asked the United States government for funding for their people to start a new life on Mars, and much to their surprise this was granted. By 2165, 90% of the Marshallese Reservation population had immigrated to Mars. The Marshallese were ready to rebuild their society free from nuclear weapons, war, and climate change.
