The images of this collage were collected in the street where I lived for 6 months in Santiago, Chile in 1996. Manipulating random found materials in collage is a great relief from the practice of 100% willed art media such as writing, musical composition, drawing, painting, and sculpture, where even the accidents are edited.
To create something entirely and solely from your imagination is a more austere pursuit than the child-like make-believe pleasure of collage, where the elements already exist. The playful essense of the art is simply moving things around. Erasmus was a great philosopher, but he's surrounded here by advertising images, producing instant ironic surrealism. John Heartfield, Max Ernst, Kurt Schwitters and Joseph Cornell are some of my collage influences.
