Actually, as a former server, I can say your assessment of his mental may be pretty damn dead on.
No one wants to be a waiter and the drudgery of the task is enough to give over to either rage, depression or suicide.
(I was fired before any of those conditions set in. I don't now if that is something to be thankful for or not.)
This is especially true when a large party, 20 or more, leaves a huge mess and no tip.
