I know this is old, but this is a really great idea. I've been feeling like all I know how to do is draw characters floating in nothingness lately (and not even doing that all that well)...this is a great subject of study.

Yes, I'd like to see more! These are awesome.
One thing.
I'm noticing most of these have a composition that slashes diagonal from the upper left to the lower right. Is there a reason for this or was it unconscious?

jeffwamester In reply to ArcaneLollipop [2012-08-20 21:43:57 +0000 UTC]
Unconscious mostly... I think it probably comes from the western reading direction, left to right. Good spot though, I need to be cognoscente of those kinds of things...

I thought that might be it... That kind of composition can be very effective of course but yeah. Thought I'd point it out.

Great exercise! Great for both animation and comic composition (the framing will be horizontal for animation, of course). You have an expansive mental library. I tried something similar to this 3-value system sketch and by the 5th thumbnail my comps grew dry. Thanks for sharing this, I am excited to revisit the exercise!

Sort of... at this point it seems like good composition is a three tone composition. Two should should dominate ( Positive and negative shapes ) and the third, a middle tone, compliment the other two...

Nice comps, definitely want to see more. I agree that the more you focus on a thing the more you de-connect from others, and you need to adress them if you want to have a balanced skillset.
