when something is dark I usually move around to focus the lens on something light that is at the same distance as the dark object I want to take a photo off. That way the object is still sharp (learned this with my old camera Olympus that isnt fond to take photos of dark stuff 
I know its harder with fast moving objects but try it XD

Yea manual is other solution,but it takes time for me to get it right XD I have glasses and they fool me sometimes that the object is sharp enough when it isnt...sigh.
