Lovely shot of this beautiful insect and great clarity.Β  I am very glad that they are so well protected in Germany! (Up to Euro 50,000 fine for killing one!)Β  They need to be as they have been unfairly persecuted in Europe.Β

Nasty sting and can be aggressive, but good job they are nothing like as dangerous as some Asian hornets (eg the potentially lethal Giant Japanese Hornet!)Β  \(^β€Ώ^)/

Requill In reply to SrTw [2017-02-22 04:19:33 +0000 UTC]

Is it okay if I ask why they're protected in Germany? I'm curious

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SrTw In reply to Requill [2017-02-22 15:07:26 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you're welcome to.

I think I can understand why you wanted to ask this, as I understand that it is not native to America (accidentally introduced there in the 19th Century) and I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was generally considered as an invasive and common pest and generally unwanted.Β  I would agree and sympathise with that feeling simply because it was artificially introduced and is not a native American species and potentially disruptive or damaging to America's own indigenous wildlife.

As far as Europe is concerned though, where it is native, it is much more endangered, partly because it has been gravely misundertood and persecuted.Β  For that reason, here, I could ask the opposite question - why aren't there more countries in Europe protecting it?Β  It is doing quite well in the UK though and has extended its range northwards, so perhaps it doesn't need protecting here (yet?!).

All in all, I would say there is a strong case for its protection in parts of Europe and also a strong case also for trying to control it in America as an unwanted invasive species.

I have heard people and press conflating this species with the invading Asian Hornet which is becoming a potentially invasive problem right now.Β  This means that the European Hornet is getting a bad press which it doesn't deserve and people may be killing the natural indigene as well as the invader which should rightly be controlled.Β  Also, people seem to be conflating the Asian Hornet with the Asian Giant Hornet (a sub-species with the killer Japanese Giant Hornet, the latter being very dangerous).Β  The press like to sensationalise and often get $ale$ and circulation at the expense of accuracy!

Anyway, good question!Β  What do you think?Β

Nine hundred square miles of wilderness straddling the state border where eastern Tennessee meets western North Carolina along the highest ridge line of the Appalachian Mountain Range, mostly in Blount, Sevier and Swain Counties as well as the Qalla Boundary with the Cherokee Nation.
