i was reading what you wrote about the process you use to make your paintings. i remember that you said something about using a compass with a paint brush. i can't quite picture that. do you put the brush hand where the pen would go? then, how do you use the the compassion without piercing the paper you're painting on. i'm kind of a compass dork. what kind of compass do you use?

On this particular work, these circles were hand drawn. In other works where I do use a compass, I have various ways of dealing with holes. First, I sanded down the compass on its arrival, so it's not as sharp. 2nd I often put down tape to keep holes from getting in paper. 3rd when a hole DOES get in the paper I use watercolor ground to fill it, and paint right over.
