Oh man, it's literally just years and years of practice
This "cel shading" that I used here, I started doing that style on the computer about 13 years ago?Β I can't remember exactly but it feels like ages ago.Β Anyway, I remember at the time I got really into the anime "Sonic X" for some reason - I spent a while studying how the cel shading worked in that show because I liked the style an awful lot back then.Β Looking at the art from the show, and deconstructing it, helped me to learn the principles of the shading style and begin applying it to my own art.Β It then kinda gradually morphed into my own style over the years (as well as leading to me finding some different styles of my own) - as you can see!
Now that I'm getting massively back into traditional art again as opposed to digital, it's a case of recreating what I'd normally do in Photoshop on paper.Β So with coloured pencils, rather than using layers in Photoshop to achieve the shading, I blend different colours together and/or apply varying degrees of colour to the drawing (starting lightly for the "main" colour and then putting more colour in the shaded areas).Β It's really just a case of messing around and finding something that works
Oh, and getting a really good quality set of pencils is essential.Β I have a nice set of Crayola pencils, which I used to colour this - I'd recommend them.

Not you too! I hope you feel better soon!
The colors and Peridot's pose are the biggest strengths of this. I love how smooth and clean the lines are and how Peridot in general came out.
