In this fantasy world, it is essentially the night sky itself.  And the moon covets it.  : )

Yeah.  Kind of an odd way of depicting it I suppose.  : )

Both the moon here and in this piece ( The Creature Within the Stars  ) are inspired by a sketch I made with watercolor pencils and ink.  I really liked the way it looked with the pastel colors and the dark border.  : )
