Because somehow "I'll just do a quick speed painting and go to bed early tonight," turned into "Let's play with abstract colors and lighting and different brushes and song lyric concepts!"
To me, the different verses of this song fit the different stages of Fai's life: verse one for the beginning of his journey, verse two for the time in Tokyo, and verse three for when he realizes the profound effect that his traveling companions (especially Kurogane) have had on him. I would elaborate, but that would involve spoilers for some people. You who have read and/or seen know of what I speak. I chose red for the color of the candle to represent Kurogane specifically because I feel it is him most of all who serves as a guiding light for Fai.
