The following is an excerpt from Devin Mercure's journal, some unspecified time in the future.

As my guide led me through the towering shelves, I tried not to gawk like a simpleton at the diverse creatures perusing the books. Most of the patrons were the sort of human-looking Faerie I was familiar with, which was only to be expected in a Faerie library, after all. Others, though, seemed even more impossibly mythic than my kin -- satyrs, feathered bird-folk, centaurs, even a demon with broken horns wearing a collar, apparently a prisoner-slave of one of the nearby Faerie. All were peaceably pursuing their interests among the well-tended stacks, as if this were a perfectly ordinary mingling of races.

I could not help but stare as we approached one such figure. Robed in black with accents of red and silver, the humanoid had a gleaming black spiral horn extending from his forehead. His long hair was likewise raven black, and in his clawed hands he held a black-bound tome, which he did not read, but only cradled protectively. Figuring that asking about the book would be less rude than asking about the creature, I whispered to my guide, "Why does he simply hold that book? Is he guarding it?"

The Faerie turned to grin at me, perhaps guessing at my unspoken question. "The book contains many forbidden spells, but at times it is necessary to read it in order to determine if someone has fallen under the influence of such magic. He is a unicorn, you see, so he can determine if a supplicant truly has an innocent purpose."

A black unicorn! The rarest of the rare. I found myself wondering why such a creature would devote his existence to guarding an inanimate object. Was he trapped or indentured by the Faerie? Or had he willingly entered their service? For what purpose? Suddenly I was more curious about him than the books around me...
