Sam “Samantha” Bell—A boy who is unwittingly dragged by his own older sister, Sophia, the Trance-Ender sisters, and Leslie into crossdressing and girly behavior. Shy, sweet, and lacking in self-esteem, he finds himself totally in over his head when he begins to hang around his sister’s friends from gymnastics. Here he is in a green one-piece swimsuit that his sister “lent” him to wear to the beach when he didn’t have anything else to wear. The girls keep around him because they like having a boy toy to dress up as a girl and generally embarrass. Sam sticks around them because they’re all older, cute and athletic girls all of whom he has a crush on to some extent (even Stephanie) and whom he’s pretty much powerless to resist. Though he always pretends that he dislikes their feminine treatment of him, all of them know pretty much that on some level, he secretly enjoys it. His favorite color is green.

Stephanie Trance-Ender—born Stephen, a girl who spent most of the beginning of her life living under the “illusion” of being a boy. Like her sister, Sissy, and Leslie she is a competitive and highly skilled gymnast, and loves wearing leotards and doing gymnastics. Can be sarcastic and abrasive at times, particularly towards people who don’t understand her. Of all of them, she has the most compassion for Sam, and seeks to help him have an understanding of who he is. However, she also knows the difference between her situation and Sam’s, that Sam is very much a boy, just one who secretly enjoys dressing as a girl, while she was always a girl and had to dress as a boy. Her favorite event in gymnastics is the floor, and her favorite color is purple.

Leslie Thompson—Stephanie’s best friend and a fellow gymnast. She and Stephanie are very close, due to her helping Stephanie through some difficult emotional times during her “transition”, and wants everyone to be able to behave how they want, regardless of what other people think. She is a very artistic and intelligent girl, willing to spend hours inside drawing in her notebook or reading, but is also a skilled athlete, having dabbled in beach volleyball as well as swimming and gymnastics. Her favorite event is the vault, and her favorite color is yellow.

Sissy Trance-Ender—Stephanie’s older sister. In addition to gymnastics, (which she participated in long before her sister did, leading to Stephanie’s longing to be a gymnast), she has also been a cheerleader and a ballet dancer. A stereotypical “girly girl” who embraces everything feminine and fashion-related, to the good-natured annoyance of her friends, who never hesitate to make fun of her for it. A mischievous, almost devious girl, who, while not arrogant or self-centered about her body image, is very confident and knowledgeable about how people (particularly boys) perceive her and how she sometimes uses it to her advantage, though only ever in good fun and never in a way that she thinks will actually harm anyone. Sam has a massive crush on her, something she is well aware of. It was her suggestion, along with working alongside Sam’s older sister Sophia, that led to Sam’s first being dressed by the girls in girly clothing. Her favorite event is the uneven bars and her favorite color is pink.
