Description WB Product Art, HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS, The Basilisk. Pencil.

This puppy was a real pill. I had to illustrate this as the pre-production department on the film were still finalizing their designs, and well before post-production worked their magic. It was a major frustration having to guess what this beastie would finally look like, while being harshly critiqued for guessing wrong. I'm only average at mind-reading after all. An earlier version of this drawing had producer David Heyman complaining that the creature as rendered didn't "look" 70 feet long. Of course, this was new information. Thanks for telling me! My art director had only previously told me to shorten the tail so that the image would fit better on product!

THEN, after I did a tight clean-up, ready for inks, word came that they added spikes to the overgrown guppy's spine! GAHH!!! After rendering ALL THOSE SCALES?!!! Grrrrrr....! Where's my electric eraser?

So you did this for Warner Brothers' marketing purposes~? o: Because I just bought a pin at Universal Studios with this on it, although not quite as detailed but still the exact pose |D
I envy the details of its head

Interesting...
When you do art for marketing, you never know where it might show up.

Even though I think the basilisk of the movie looks pretty neat, I need to plead it's NOT a snake... I mean, that's something that bothers me in the movie - they refer to it as a snake all the time. A snake doesn't look like this, people.

Jerome-K-Moore In reply to Kurvos [2011-03-31 21:19:05 +0000 UTC]

I wouldn't get so worked up about it. This version of the mythical creature has no limbs, and is serpentine. Therefore, it's easy for folks to carelessly classify it as a giant snake, however erroneously. In the midst of terror, details tend to get obscured, and the most obvious imagery gets the message across, especially if most people don't really know what a basilisk is.

I remember the creature in "Alien3" being referred to as a "dragon" by one of the crazed victims. No big deal.

KatePfeilschiefter In reply to Jerome-K-Moore [2011-07-11 08:04:14 +0000 UTC]

Well, basilisks in myth were always referred to as the king of serpents, regardless of whether they had limbs or not. Though if you really wanted to get technical, basilisks are also small, their name even means "little king". So you were probably doing the right thing when your producer said it didn't look 70ft long.

True . . . but he could've killed Harry when his fang became lodged in Harry's arm near the movie's end. But, whatever . . . your depiction of this astounding beast is astounding itself!

Thank you!
But I had nothing to do with making the films possible.
All credit must go to JK Rowling for providing such an entertaining series of novels, with compelling characters, and for giving the rest of us such a cool project to be a part of down the line.

Jerome-K-Moore In reply to earthsea-23 [2009-08-30 01:44:14 +0000 UTC]

Not at all, because I did not design the Basilisk. My work here was merely a translation of what the amazing artists were doing on the film production, and I cannot take any credit away from them. Warner Bros is a company made up of many, many parts. The division where I worked was attached to Marketing, and it was my job to represent the work of the WB feature crew on the Harry Potter films in the best way that I could for merchandising purposes.
