Description WB Animation, Incidental Character Design, YOUNG JUSTICE. Pencil, Digital Color.

Added to the challenge of helping to create a cartoon world is that of populating this world with ordinary people. I don't like to "phone it in" on anything, so, as often as I can, I endeavor to imbue even the incidental character designs with some personality, and interesting nuance. Presented here is one example of how I designed a couple of school kids in the Young Justice universe, adhering to the style established by Phil Bourassa, while adding my own touches and humor.

The geeky kid on the right has a divided devotion to DC superheroes, wearing a Green Lantern T-shirt, a Batman belt buckle, a Superman wristwatch, and some Flash sneakers.
Maybe he also has on some Wonder Woman underwear?

Wonder what it's like to be a superhero geek in the world of superheroes?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jerome-K-Moore In reply to rosutu [2012-04-28 20:02:05 +0000 UTC]

I imagine it's that much more geeky, since their heroes truly live.

I wonder if it'd also be more like the buzz around celebrities? Fan clubs, The Flash's autograph selling for $3000 on eBay, tabloids "exposing" the sordid stories brewing in the JLA Watchtower...

I think that's a safe guess.

The guy on the right looks like a kid at my school... a lot. He's probably a bit shorter though.

I like your drawing so much, there is so much personality in them! We could make a whole show on these kids xD

when will we see these guys? will they have any lines?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jerome-K-Moore In reply to brecelet [2011-06-03 20:55:50 +0000 UTC]

Anything I've posted online has already appeared on the show. Whether or not they are noticed by the viewers is another matter entirely, since I'm mostly responsible for secondary, tertiary, and incidental background characters. These characters seldom have any lines of dialogue beyond what is called "walla," which refers to crowd noise.

haha, guess I haven't notice. my bad. it's a shame though, you obviously put a lot of thought and detail into your characters...

Thanks. But I don't see it as a shame. Throughout my career as an illustrator, I've always tried to put forth my hardest effort, regardless of the application, or the measure of attention. The reward is in being able to do the work at all, using the gift bestowed on me. Favorable recognition is a fringe benefit; it should never be the primary impetus, or the goal.

if there are school kids? I wonder if there will be another episode showing Wally's school..
cuz there is no way they go to Dick's school xD

Jerome-K-Moore In reply to PurpleHated [2011-05-17 23:15:37 +0000 UTC]

Dick attends Gotham Academy, where the students wear school uniforms. So these kids obviously go to another school.

Very detailed and original for background characters, and nice style by the way. These guys look like they could be actual high school students. In fact, I was shocked to see that the guy on the left, since he reminds me of one of my best friends from high school, except he didn't have a zit/mole on his face and and he never wore a dress shirt under his baggy clothes, other than that an almost perfect match.

I like this one alot, it has two kids of clashing interests at least in style. The one on the left looks Punk compared to the Comic Book Geek of the kid of the right...now that I look at him he almost looks like a young cartoon Adam Sandler
