Description
This piece is differing from most of my pieces in that the shipgirl is not really a warship. Instead the former Commonwealth liner SS Jervis bay was a militarized merchant cruiser. Re-designated as HMS Jervis Bay, she was pressed into military duty along with most of her crew, all of whom volunteered. she was put into convoy duty, protecting the (oftentimes smaller) transports and tankers on the dangerous and long journey from America to the European theatre of war. In May 1940, Convoy HX 84 departed Halifax and after the Canadian escorts peeled away to return home, Jervis Bay remained as the lone protector. As fate would have it, the convoy was spotted by the German pocked battleship KMS Admiral Scheer. With nothing but her 7 6-inch guns between the battleship and the 37 ships of the convoy, Jervis Bay turned to face the foe. Unlike the battle of David vs. Goliath, this battle was incredibly one-sided. Scheer was not hit once, as she could keep her distance outside the range of Jervis' guns. Her own 11 inch guns however tore into the merchant cruiser, ripping apart its superstructure. When the ship would not cease fire, the German warship systematically shot out every last gun emplacement, by which time the ship was ablaze bow to stern. Only once she had nothing left to shoot with, did her crew begin evacuation. Her sacrifice held up the pocket-battleship long enough for the convoy to scatter and flee. Having lost her surface radar during the fight due to shock from her main battery, Admiral Scheer was only able to hunt down 5 of the convoy's ships. It was thanks to the desperate fight put up by their protector, that 32 ships of the convoy, loaded with general goods, oil, steel, timber and medical supplies, reached the besieged British shores.
