I don't think they've lost popularity as much as there aren't any more good games of them. The Crash franchise was ruined, Nuts and Bolts was a joke, and people are begging for Threeie, Earthworm Jim only had a remaster way back. It's more like the developers forgot them, not the fans. Still, Mega Man 9 and 10 were the first Mega Man games I ever saw, they got me into the franchise. So I'd say those were a success.

If you've played Mario Bros. (and no I don't mean Super Mario Bros.), you would know that they are clearly plumbers (except in Wrecking Crew and Donkey Kong where they are carpenters). This is also hinted at by the pipes that appear in some form in almost every title in the Super Mario series. Why else would Mario's (and Luigi's) trademark clothes be overalls? Look it up, it's a widely known fact.
