Oh god this is 10 years ago and it still doesn't exist? I saw this today and I really love the idea! But 10 years ago? And still not here???
I'm sad now. This would be perfect if this exists here one day!

Thanks! I think even since the site has changed so much the functionality is still current and valuable.

As the writer of multi-chapter fan fiction, this would definitely be a feature I'd like to see in DA. It'd save me the trouble of setting up manual links between chapters.

Indeed! the look is a lot outdated by now, but the idea is still strong even after so many years. Hope some day it happens... the community outcry for it has certainly been huge!

Wow! Really well done!
The idea is very simple and very good. This could be amazing to have.

Thanks! I thought the notion was pretty simple, too. Sad that it hasn't been picked up for what's obviously a huge outcry from the dA Writing community in the comments here.

I'd love to see it implemented, too. I think even while the look of the site has changed tremendously, the ideas are still sound.
yeah... it's an odd thing about the deactivated DD'er, but I've seen stranger. lmao

I love the idea of chapters. One of the reasons I haven't posted many of my chapter stories on dA is because they would flood my gallery.

has deviantART done anything like this yet? found it in the favorites of my old account.
it's still a great idea and would be good for more than just literature stuff.
people who draw comics/manga could also make good use of this.
tutorials would benefit as well since you wouldn't have to give everyone a big block of information at once.
sometimes i wonder how this website itself is even half decent with all the fantastic suggestions that seem to get ignored.

For as much attention as this idea continues to receive, I'm assuming they haven't. But I also am not checking up on that as, while I continue to write and support the writing community, I no longer post writing to dA.
I think a lot of other people are wondering the same thing about the rest of your thoughts. Perhaps myself included!

I think the ability to have all the chapters of a literature piece on one page would put dA years ahead of just about everyone else out there. As would annotations and the ability to bookmark where you left off! Reminds me of Microsoft Reader, if that's even still around (want to say Microsoft killed it years back). Only issue I can see is with load times if there's a lot of chapters, but I'm not even sure if that would be much of a problem.

JesseLax In reply to JamieMDavies [2012-01-14 21:03:41 +0000 UTC]
You raise an interesting point about load times. I don't think with plain-text (provided the correct unicode set is chosen) it will really be terrible on load times. A great solution to that could be to simply load all of the chapters at first paeg-load, so all of the chapters are already there when you enter the deviation. Then it's only a matter of having your code of choice call the tabs. When it boils down to it, most slow load times come from calls to the database or graphics with a larg-file size. We're looking at minimal to none with this example... so ideally it should be pretty easy to implement (barring security... i don't have a lot of experience there).

combining chapters into a single deviation is so logical and great that it makes me wonder why it's not so already? i've favorited almost fifty chapters of a story i liked. it makes no sense. the tabs are great, and easy. line numbers, though less useful imo, are also cool. also i've noticed something you put in that you didn't mention and that is the suggest DD on the left. there is no such button that i've found and it is something we need. and if it would send a DD suggestion to the person in charge according to the deviation tagging (such as lit>fiction>drama>novel)

JesseLax In reply to AspiredWriter [2012-01-10 19:44:08 +0000 UTC]
When I'm in a hurry, sometimes I use screenshots to save time. This was one of those. At the time I was using a Greasmonkey script someone had developed that was the DD suggestion tool you see there. The script worked splendidly back then (it was really f'n cool), and as I recall the script was based on a suggestion that was a contemporary to mine. I'm not sure if it's still available, though. Creations like that need a lot of upkeep with the constant change of GMs and so forth. Based on that I wouldn't be surprised if it was defunct by now... and is also probably the reason why that sort of tool isn't currently in use on the site. Were it purely $taff that were handling DDs, could be a different story.
And thank you very kindly for the feedback on the idea. I'm surprised it hasn't come into fruition myself. Apart from the logic being simple, the IT development shouldn't be too difficult either. perhaps forgiving security, anyway. This idea has been around for a long time, it's holding strong at the top of the pile, and lots of staff have looked, fav'd, and otherwise taken notice of it. While that's no promise to any of us---it's at least hopeful. We'll just have to be patient and wait and see!

lol, I'm sure! At a guess, I'm thinking you may be no more surprised than the rest of the lit community. I think at this point dA could write "This is for the dA Lit Community" on a jellybean, give it to them, and they'd at very least be pleased to get something.

You got a daily deviation two years ago yet they have done nothing like this? I think just the chapters would be great, once you have more than three or four chapters no one wants to go to the trouble of navigating your work.

Yes! This would be a perfect idea!
I write chaptered stories a lot and I submit them here. This would be an easier way to keep track of the chapters to each story!
I have a few suggestions to add on with this one:
A small check box in a user's gallery which turns off all literature deviations that are not stand-alone (have no preceding or following chapters) or the first chapter.
So, if someone were writing ten different stories, and they had all the chapters shuffled, checking the check box would allow you to view only the first chapter of each story, making it easier to find.
It should also be available for image works too, such as web comics where each page is uploaded as a separate deviation. (Instead of chapters, they would be referred to as pages)
I have also noticed that you do not have "Next Chapter" or "Previous Chapter" buttons. Those should be in there too, to make it even easier to navigate.
On a different note, would you like me to make a couple images around this and send them to you via e-mail? The images would be this same idea, updated to version 7 of deviantART. One would have the add-ins I suggested, the other would not. Then you could submit them as your own deviations. (If you take the one with the add-ins I suggested, I will want credit for the added ideas )
