Description Since I've been asked to do this by about 20 people I figured it was time to stop putting it off and just get it done. Keep in mind the principles are the same for whatever character you draw. Doesn't need to be Sally in the end. The third drawing is going to be used for a drawing challenge at Go check it out and take part if you're interested. Even if your not a Sally fan, I'm sure it'll still be good practice for anyone who takes part.

Step 1

The first step is to establish your pose. Drawing it out like a "constellation" will determine the characters proportions, length of limbs and that your drawing will fit on the page. You shouldn't be adding any details (like facial features or clothing) until everything else is worked out. use circles to represent the characters head and joints.

Step 2

Since this is a tutorial, I've fully drawn out each shape that I think represents all the characters key body parts. I don't normally draw in structure to this degree unless I am having alot of trouble making the character look correct. I think if you do a good job on Step 1 you can kind of slack on Step 2. Pay attention to the way limbs curve. Legs aren't just straight up and down like a ruler. Between the foot and the knee there is a subtle curve backwards and from the knee to the hip there is a subtle curve forward. Knowing where to add curves will add alot more life to you character. Keep perspective in mind when drawing each shape, especially on the face. using cross hairs is an excellent way to position the eyes, nose and mouth on the head circle. In this case for the hair and tail a general shape can be drawn in and detail added later once you get to that step.

Step 3

Go ahead and start putting in whatever detail you want. Since this is for reference I have chosen to draw the character nude for simplicity. Perspective and structure are also important in clothing, hair and props as well. Try to incorporate your detail to work with your underlying structure so that the general shape is still obvious.

A good practice exercise would be to take the third finished drawing and trace over it putting in all the structure shapes (example Step 2).

Use this tutorial any way you like. Feel free to trace it and use it to create your own characters using this as a base if you need help getting started. I've kept the pose pretty basic so it could be adapted pretty easily. If you are looking for some extra help with Sally's face this might be of help: [link]

Tutorials are not about impressing! They are about learning! Thank you SO much! It's even better because you draw her so awesome. She looks mature and beautiful! Look at her legs! Especially her hair and face! You are an excellent artist! I only wish to draw as well as you! Awesome!

looks interesting, and the result is great.

i'm not used to draw a great base like that. i usually draw a few simple lines as base, just for an idea, then start making the curves and lines over it.. maybe i'm just too lazy

Hey. I just want to say, recently I've started taking life drawing classes. And I've realized I've been using the same sort of construction on the models you used on this Sally tutorial, just adapted to real people, it's really made a huge differance in my drawing. Thank you so much for posting this.

very ver cool luv - never could figure out the whole 'spine' aspect of drawing - I've certainly tried doing it like this, but I've always just drawn the head first and make up everything as I went along. - now I find myself starting with the shoulders of all things

Yup.

Sorry to say this but any chance you're gonna teach us how to draw her clothes (NO NOT THE CHARACTER; THIS TUTORIAL HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE LOL!)? Either way you're still awesome.

This will help me draw Sally better b/c I have a lot of trouble drawing her.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JessFox In reply to FirebirdPhoenix87 [2010-04-05 11:38:13 +0000 UTC]

Well, this is how I do it. I think everyone has different ways and I wanted to show mine because I keep getting asked. Yes, the clothes will come later, but they're easy. Just trace them on top of her body mostly.

You're a verry good teacher... But, a question : there is a big difference between a girl and a boy in this tutorial ?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JessFox In reply to YaminoKitsune [2010-04-05 11:13:05 +0000 UTC]

There isn't a HUGE difference. Male characters are alot less curvy and are more boxy. There would be alot less definition in the hip area and the chest would be relatively flat. I guess I should consider drawing a tutorial for males, shouldn't I...

There is enough of a difference that you couldn't trace this off and make it into a male very easily. :/

YaminoKitsune In reply to JessFox [2010-04-05 11:20:30 +0000 UTC]

Sinceyou're the one who draw it, you're the only one who can decide...
I tryied to draw the fox head... it wasn'tlike your but it look like likea fox ^^

Do you like how it looked when you were done? It doesn't have to look like mine, but if it doesn't and your unhappy with it, just try it again. Show me if you want more help with it.

Nicely done, this is exactly how people need to draw, guidelines are really important. Keeps everything in place, and proportionate.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JessFox In reply to DarkFairyYume [2010-04-05 01:56:41 +0000 UTC]

It's such a hard thing to try to explain and I hope I didn't make it overly complicated. Hopefully this helps a few people even if it's just a little. There really isn't any substitute for practice.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DarkFairyYume In reply to JessFox [2010-04-05 02:06:14 +0000 UTC]

Oh I think you did just fine, I like how you started off with circles and lines, then fleshed it out, and then added detail last, that's exactly how the order should be. Advanced people can get away with skipping to stage two, but newbies like to try and go to stage three right away and that's where they make the mistake when it comes to learning to draw.
And you're right, there is no substitute for practice, but I think this is really helpful, I hope people get good use out of this.
