Description Drosselmeyer, the Breeders' Cup Classic winner?! Who woulda thought!

After winning the Belmont Stakes in 2010, Drosselmeyer didn't do anything overly extraordinary. So has been the case lately with Belmont winners. The race has, in recent years, been won by flukes, if you will, and Drosselmeyer kind of fell into that category. Yes, he was putting in strong showings here and there, but he never quite lived up to the potential that he flashed that June day.

He showed us all last Saturday that Belmont winners CAN do it again, and in the unlikeliest of places.

This is Drosselmeyer in the Brooklyn Handicap at Belmont Park this past June. Run at a mile and a half, the Brooklyn was to be an important stepping stone en route to the Breeders' Cup Marathon. Coincidentally--see that white nose there on the left hand side? That's the nose OF the Marathon winner, Afleet Again. Haha! Gotta love it. I focused on Drosselmeyer that day because I had a feeling he was going to win the Brooklyn. Er...he didn't, but a few months later? Boy, am I glad I made that decision!

Congrats on NOT being a one-hit wonder, beautiful Drosselmeyer!

I was quite happy to see Drosselmeyer win myself too, I was hoping we would see him in the headlines again after Belmont just did not think it would take this long!

I know! I was hoping he was going to win this race he's pictured in, the Brooklyn, as it was Belmont and at the distance the Belmont Stakes was run. He was no match for his stablemate, Birdrun, however. In hindsight, this was a race bursting with BC potential. I'll look more closely at it next year as such, not just the minor headliner for Belmont Eve.

Looks like there was a clause in his contract so he might race again before retiring to stud. They may try another Grade 1 before the end of the year to get an eclipse award for him. I hope he doesn't go to stud in 2012 and we see more Drosselmeyer in the future Racing needs horses like him to run a little bit more and retire a little later. I like the horses under the radar to pull a win and get noticed and D was definitely under the radar. My local fave, Atta Boy Roy, did not have a good year and opted out of the BC Sprint. Hopefully his connections choose to run him in 2012 and maybe locally at the Longacres Mile too as I was hoping he would show up last season. Thank you for all your wonderful photos! I love them

Glad he won (is it bad I was rooting for someone, anyone to beat Chantal in the stretch? Haha) especially for Mike Smith and Winstar. Big fan of both parties for sure. I didn't look twice at Dross in the entries, total surprise he won. I think Court Vision was the only horse all day that I liked who actually won, ironically.

This is a great photo of him!

Thank you! I am so happy for Drosselmeyer, Court Vision, and Afleet Again. Old faves who just kinda showed up in the entries--not that they didn't belong there, but totally forgotten in the midst of all the other bigger "now" names. Never not liked them, but certainly, easily overlooked them. Seriously, never would have thought Court Vision was going to beat Goldikova.

Why the hate for Chantal? LOL I kinda feel bad for her...how many times has she probably heard it that it was Mike who beat her? How awkward and embarrassing.

I know! Lots of ironic upsets that day for sure.

Chantal... I worked at woodbine when she started out. (2003/2004/2005 ish) She got really famous posing in a magazine (vogue or something) riding a thoroughbred in just her bra and underwear, so I guess that just got her reputation going and people didn't take her seriously. (A lot of the horses she rode were for trainers who were kind of perverts, just perpetuated the rumours and such) I mean I don't mind her really but I don't have the same respect for her as say, Emma Wilson.

Haha, 1.06 Breeders' Cup winners in this photograph. Well done. I had always been sort of fond of Drosselmeyer because I grew up with the Nutcracker, but boy, was I pissed when he ran down Chantal!

My friend posted a picture on Flickr of last year's Belmont Stakes with Drosselmeyer passing Game On Dude in the stretch. Shows just how many times these horses have faced off against each other and how it's so funny how things play out in the future, both near and far. It would have been a great story for Chantal to have won, but it's neat that Drosselmeyer got his elusive second big win. Wonderful stories full of irony abounded in this year's Classic. Part of what makes me love this sport so.
