Description "He made a huge statement today," trainer Todd Pletcher said. I'll say! Verrazano pulverized the rest of the talented field, winning by over 9 lengths and proving without a doubt: he's BACK. He will next meet his stablemate, Belmont Stakes and Jim Dandy winner Palace Malice, in the Travers at Saratoga.

Photography-wise, shooting this race was a riot. The weather held out, even though thunderstorm forecasts were updated sporadically throughout the day (good news, bad news, good news, etc). Around Haskell time, an ominous cloud covered the sun and darkened the track, and I boosted my ISO. I turned to my friend (who, like me, was lamenting the loss of that gorgeous, perfect Monmouth light) and joked, "Watch, the sun will come out as the winner is crossing the wire." And would you know it, that's exactly what happened! LOL Thankfully, the photo came out wonderfully, despite settings I would have preferred to alter. I have yet to shoot a Haskell poorly. I'm thanking Monmouth for that: both for its fantastic location, and the gracious people who run the track and make us photographers feel so welcome.

Beautiful shot! I'm not a huge fan of Verrazano, but in any case his race is the Haskell was outstanding. The Travers is definitely going to be an interesting race.

Thank you! I always love Verrazano, but I have to admit I was rooting for Oxbow in here.Β  I just love that little firecracker of a horse!Β  You are certainly right, the Travers...man oh man, that's gonna be a good one. Β

I can't wait for the Travers, getting pretty excited! Β Just wished poor Oxbow did not get injured.

Oxbow is going to be okay--it's just a sprain. Β Lukas said he could still make the Travers, but quite honestly, I think the horse should be rested and prepped for the fall season. Β The little guy gives 110% every time and has run more than any of 'em; no one deserves a break more than him!

I agree 110% I would really like to see him well rested and bypass the Travers, let Orb, Palace Malice and Verrazano duke that one out. Β I hope the rest since the Belmont did lots of good for Orb these boys had a busy spring already!

Thanks! Yeah, Verrazano is definitely one hunk o' horse! He always stands out physically from his opponents...and in this case, pretty does equal fast! (That ain't always the case, hehe!)
