This reminds me of some research I was doing recently regarding Japanese Shinto Animal spirits. One of them was a spiritual form of the Japanese-raccoon dog; they were typically depicted as male, I believe (just as the kitsune or fox-demon are predominantly refered to as female), but I rather like your image as a nice interpretation as well.
