Description Okay, so it's been several months since he's been finished. Amazing that it's taken me this long to find the time to talk about him. I'll try to make this brief as I would like to work on my next project (which is nearly done... the sculpting part at least).

Let's see...
Each of the limbs (arms, legs and probably head) took over 4 hours each to sculpt. One of the legs was almost done but I decided I didn't like it so I restarted. The arms and legs have small, wooden skewers inside of them for support. The tail was originally made just as solid Sculpey but I later decided to thread a wire through to make it stronger. That was definitely a good idea.

The wings were by far the most challenging part. I started with wire frames, cut and measured to be as symmetrical as possible. Then the Sculpey: Shaped as carefully as possible to also be symmetrical. Not too bad so far. The fabric... well... I was thinking at one point of using a tye-dye colour texture but my art teacher basically told me that with tye-dye, you can only really do circle patterns. That's a good thing that I was turned off of the idea because it was stupid to begin with. I cut out tons of wing patterns before finally settling on these ones. The reason mostly being that I couldn't figure out how to colour them. In the end, the best solution turned out to be the simplest solution. I won't explain all my other attempts but the idea that made it was simply to colour the fabric (which by the way was an old shirt of mine) yellow, rinse it out in the sink, and then use a sponge to lightly colour them red. That was that. I should mention that the fabric is merely glued onto the back of the wing frames. This means that they are not really meant to be viewed from behind.

The platform that he's on was also a nightmare. I don't know at which point it was but thankfully, I made the financially-wise decision to make it out of clay (supplied by my teacher) rather than Sculpey. For all of you who use Sculpey, you know how expensive it is. Using a ton of it for a base would be nothing more than a waste of money (unless you really needed to for some reason).

The base was actually supposed to be a rocky cliff or something but due to a number of unexpected size/posing problems, I had to create a makeshift base that based on the Metroid series, doesn't really make sense, but it was the only thing that would work. Ridley's hand needed to be leaning at such a sharp angle that a rock just wouldn't look right without being wider... but that would cover some of his body, which I didn't want. Instead, I went with the crystal thing. The texture was extremely easy. It's funny, I can't think of what the original object was but for some reason, I had to press some clay on it for the negative imprint, wait until the teacher fired it, press another piece of clay in That to make the positive imprint, wait for the teacher to fire That and then use that to stamp the base, giving it that almost-phazon-like appearance. Granted, I probably should have included more vine shapes but since I was using crystals, there wasn't much point in being to fussy with how accurate my representation of the material was. *Deep breath*... man, that was a mouth-full.

Another problem sprang up when I fired my first model of the base (which was with the stone design and therefore, took much less work). Clay looses all of it's moisture when it's fired so naturally, it shrinks. This, I knew... but I had no idea how much to expect it to shrink. Since Ridley's hands and feet all had to fit in specific places [nearly] perfectly, I was very disappointed when I discovered that I had no choice but to do another base because the one I did had shrunken way too much. The second base (and the one you're looking at) still didn't totally solve that problem. My dad's girlfriend, Jaci thankfully was generous enough to offer a shell from her collection (which I believe was from Mexico) to fill in a frustrating gap between his left foot and the ground beneath it. If you're wondering what that weird, dark blue part is, now you know.

One last thing: I am well aware that Ridley is supposed to be all skinny and such. I did him all muscled-out because number one: I found a bit of fan-art (found on my favorites page) that used this design and number two: because i knew if i did Ridley's real body, it would be way more fragile than I felt like dealing with. As for his head... well... it wasn't until a couple of weeks after his completion that I figured out what was wrong with him... his damn beak is too short... waaaay too short. A couple of days ago, I was thinking of giving him some "surgery" but I have enough sculpting plans to be bothered with that. All of my pieces have some flaws that I hate about them. I just have to accept them and use them to my advantage. They allow me to see my progression and that's important for days when I don't feel particularly motivated.

That's all though. I can't drag this any longer. Thanks for viewing!

Would you be willing to sell this amazing piece of craft? Attention to detail and amazing modeling has my jaw dropped!
I understand if its expensive, but if it ever is on the market I'll strongly consider purchasing this unbelievable piece of art.

It was supposed to be a gift for my friend, but I told him (at the time) that I couldn't let it go.

It's been quite a while since I made Ridley, so I might be able to part with it. With tuition fee deadlines approaching, it would probably be wise for me to consider it at least. I'll talk to a few people about how I should price it and I'll let you know.

The other issue is figuring out how to package it safely for shipping. It is quite fragile so I'd feel terrible if it didn't survive the trip.

Thanks a lot. The wings were pretty tricky but he wouldn't be the same without them. They're actually not sculpey though. The "fingers" of the wings are but the rest is an old shirt that I basically painted.

Holy crap, that is AWESOME. There's really nothing bad to say about this sculpture...it seems like a very good representation of Ridley.

The only thing you could do to make it better is probably to paint the blue bits under Ridley's hands and feet to better blend into the base.

You're taking on Ridley for a first sculpture? That's quite ambitious. I just took a quick look at your page and based on that, I'd say you're more than capable of doing that screeching space bird some justice.

I only know the "Fuseli's Nightmare" because it comes up on the wikipedia page for Sleep Paralysis which is something I get very frequently. That's a definite favorite.

Good luck with Ridley.

Haha thanks alot! I've never had sleep paralysis, but it seems to be pretty frightening stuff from what I've read.
As for Ridley, i've just started on the basic shape of the head, but I really need to invest in sandpaper to smooth it down just how I want it.

My Ridley seems primitive in comparison.

I'm glad you like what I've done but I wouldn't dare say it's any better than yours. That's half the reason why I'm on here. You can learn a ton of stuff from other sculptors. Everybody has weird little things that they're good with.

Thank you very much! It's funny that you should mention the accuracy because a few days ago... infact... it would have been the day you posted this, I was planning on re-doing his head since his beak isn't long enough. I've got a bunch of other projects planned so I decided not to go through with it anyways but comments like that help.
Also funny that you should ask about purchasing him. I've been thinking for a long time (especially today) about trying to sell some of my stuff via-online. I'm not really sure what all the necessary steps are (especially since it's such fragile stuff) but I would like to look into it. The real problem is putting a price on one of my pieces. I would naturally want to give them a modest price just because I know that I'm an ammature however, when it actually comes down to it, I'd probably rather have the sculpture than the money unless it was priced as a professional piece. It's actually quite the dilemma for me.

Sorry for the huge reply but it's extremely encouraging to be asked something like that.

As for commissions , I can't see myself being able to do that seeing as I tend to take a real long time getting these finished (especially now that I'm working). The other thing is that if a sculpture isn't going how I'd like it to, I often bail on it completely. Who knows though.

I'm going to post some pictures of Ridley on a different site and ask people what they'd pay for it. I don't want to ask that question to anybody who is actually interested in buying it.

That's it for my huge rant though. Get back to me if you're serious.

Tusami In reply to Jester-Race [2007-12-02 21:15:55 +0000 UTC]

You're very welcome; it really deserves everything I said.

Hmmm... the beak isn't long enough? Well it was impossible for me to tell since there was only one picture to look at but now you've gotten several more on there (and thank you for that) I get a better view of what it really looks like. To me, the beak really isn't that bad at all. Maybe it's just a tad short but it still looks very well done and no one but you would really notice or care if it's not microscopically perfect. ^^ I still think it's beautiful and the amount of work and detail you've already put into this speaks for itself.

As for selling stuff online, it's really not very difficult to set something up and send it off to people. I'm sure there are sites out there to help you with that process and heck, anyone on deviantART could even help you, even me. It's really not all the difficult to make something and sell it, I recently got into that myself. The hardest thing though is to let your pride and joy go; it's really hard sometimes to send off something that you worked so hard on and know you'll never see it again and wonder if that person will appreciate it as much as you did. And yes pricing is definitely THE hardest thing to do. Trust me, that's the dilemma with everyone. But it's a very good idea to ask others what they would spend on it. Also take a look at other people's prices, look at the quality and time they put it and their experience in sculpting and use that as a base for your own work. Outside opinion helps a lot, ask people if it's a reasonable price and tell them why it costs that much (such as time put into the work). You'll catch on eventually.

And, no it's perfectly fine you send a huge reply; I love getting long comments!

Commissions, yes it does require a lot of work and a little free time on your hands to be able to do them, as well as good quality of art... but everyone has to start somewhere. I think that you'd get commissioned if you were to offer them. You can always put limits on the number you accept at a time so you don't overwhelm yourself. As for abandoning a project because it's not what you want, I can definitely understand. It's not easy and it could even be harder when you're doing if for someone else. But I think you should definitely consider it. Maybe now is not a good time, but later down the road.

Yes! Definitely ask people what they'd be willing to pay for it! You're already on your way, what do you need me for? lol. What they say will definitely help you out I think. And not asking people who want to buy it... hmm, that could actually be smart. You'll definitely have a different opinion about your work and a different price offered if it's someone that wants to buy it... but then again, they might even offer more money because they want it to badly. I know I would.

Oh and since I typed it wrong last time...

Hey, sorry for taking so long to reply. I have this problem where I'd rather not reply to a long, thoughtful comment unless I have the time to reply with a thoughtful comment myself. ;

I'm no longer going to give Ridley his head replacement surgery. If I always fix sculptures (long after they've been done), I'll never get to really see my skills progress... so I figure it's best just to leave him.

As my latest journal lists, I have a bunch of things planned out but once those are out of the way, I'd be happy to take any suggestions you might have. Whether or not I could send it to you isn't something I can be sure of yet... but we can figure that out when the time comes.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jester-Race In reply to Rodney-Aran [2007-09-07 02:47:22 +0000 UTC]

Everything except for the wings and the base are made of sculpey. There are also wooden "bones" inside of the limbs for support as well as wire frames for the wings.

How long did it take? Put it this way: Each leg took over 4 hours to sculpt... and I ended up squishing one of the legs and starting over.... so that's over 12 hours of leg sculpting right there. x_X The arms took about the same ammount of time... infact, I think it was closer to 5 hours for the legs. Bleh, suppressed memories.

The body, as I said, is made out of sculpey and probibly took about as long as each leg. The head is a lot easier but it still probibly took around 3 hours.

The wings were by far the worst part. I cut the wings out so many freaking times and ended up starting over because I didn't like how the paint job looked. As you can see, I ended up just going for the Meta-Ridley look with straight yellow (and a bit of red... though, you probibly can't tell from that picture).

The base was a major pain in the ass two (I had to make two of them in the end) because Ridley's hands and feet had to fit just right and that's hard because clay shrinks when it's in the kiln.

Haha, sorry for the long response. I haven't really had a chance to rant about this thing yet. Too many freaking hours... so I'm glad you like him.

Rodney-Aran In reply to Jester-Race [2007-09-07 03:25:19 +0000 UTC]

Next time you do something like that, here's some advice: don't use clay. If you've ever heard of Games Workshop, they still a putty called Green Stuff. It hardens by itself when you're finished molding it, and once it's hardened, people say it's like a rock. When I went in to buy some, though, they were sold out. I wanted to know how you made it because I just got a WarHammer 40,000 army (I don't know if you've heard of that or not, look it up on here) and I'm converting it to a Space Pirate army. I need to have Ridley in there. And I enjoyed you're long rant. I really needed specifics like that. Thanks.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jester-Race In reply to Rodney-Aran [2007-09-07 04:03:10 +0000 UTC]

Ahh, I think I know the stuff you're talking about.

The reason why I used clay was because sculpey is expensive and using that much of it just for a base seems like a huge waste of money. I was in a ceramics class in school so I had access to as much clay as I needed (as well as a kiln to cook the stuff in). Now that I'm no longer in that class, I can't use clay anymore so that green stuff could be perfect if it's fairly cheap. Thanks for the advice.

I love your idea of converting WarHammer miniatures into a Space Pirate army. I don't know if you've played it (or how much of it you've played) but there are a LOT of different Space Pirates in that game.

As for adding Ridley to your army, I don't think mine would fit your size standards. I just measured him for the first time haha. From the base to the top of his wings, he is 11" tall and his wing span makes him 10.5" wide. Pretty big for a miniature methinks.

Rodney-Aran In reply to Jester-Race [2007-09-07 04:10:48 +0000 UTC]

...that size sounds like something of been looking for lol jk But as for green stuff being cheap, I don't know how much it costs, but to get an idea of their price rate, they sell little bottles of glue for $8, and some small metal models range anywhere from $10 to $25. The tyranid battleforce box, what I'm converting, cost $90. And if you want to see my Omega Pirate conversion, check out my recent devations on my main page.
