Description THIS IS NOT AN ORIGINAL PIECE OF WORK- it is a reproduction from a tutorial video by Martin Bland and can be found at www.spyroteknik.com

I am trying to learn how to paint in photoshop, both the laws of colour theory and how to use the tools available to put marks on the screen. the videos showing how to do this painting were very helpful and I recommend anyone wishing to learn digital painting should give them a look. the video is not sped up and mostly uses default brushes. it took me about 4 hours to produce this piece, though Mr Bland produces them in approximately 50 mins, first dealing with the sky and then the city.

Notes:
1 The city is created in several bands, each a darker, duller colour than the one behind.

2 A simple texture brush was applied at low oppacity to quickly add windows to the skyscrapers.

3 Highlights were added to the buildings by picking the yellow in the sky and applying it at low opacity with a tall narrow brush

4 the brightest part of the sky was made brighter by painting over it with white, with a large soft round brush, at low opacity on aseparate layer. this layer was then set to overlay mode.

5 Similarly, a haze was added to the city itself and the mid-tone area of the sky using the same technique, but with a very light orange colour.

6 repeated elements like the cranes, windows and highlights were created with custom brushes- these were made by simply doodling the b & w silhouette in a new document, and choosing edit>make brush preset in the menu.

Very nice! So is this your first painting done in Photoshop? You are off to a good start if so. And 4 hours for everything is not bad at all!
