In many ways, the Caliburn Class represents an enlarged and improved iteration of Sovereign Class architecture. And is one of the biggest Starfleet explorers in current service. Following Wolf 359, the Sovereign Project was re-purposed as leaner and lighter spaceframe with marked emphasis on combat capabilities. The intended original and larger configuration was then shelved but not forgotten by Starfleet. Becoming the perfect springboard for the budding Next Generation Explorer (NGE) Study as an ongoing program to determine a future long range explorer to exceed current designs.

Significant operational data from the Sovereign fleet was gathered in the field, aiding the NGE Study. Which continued to develop technologies and crafting prototype test spaceframes of various configurations. A successful example of these frames would become the Caliburn Class. A tremendous display of Starfleet's shipbuilding mastery, she boasts a muscular and blended hull. With five spaceframes currently active, the Caliburn is meant as a limited production model to preview technologies and test propulsion configurations. There is also potential for Slipstream Capability once the hull is further optimized and refined.

The type is highly sought after by starship enthusiasts, owing to its rarity in the fleet. Able to swing from explorer and if needed, battleship functions, the Caliburn is also actively influencing the more ambitious Odyssey Project. It appears that these gentle giants are to become the future fleet flagships.
