Description "Too often we hold fast to the clichés of our forebears. We subject all facts to a prefabricated set of interpretations. We enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought."
- JFK

I was thinking of this the other day, and there seems to be a general bifurcation of Trek fans. There's the people who were all in for the message of a better tomorrow under social equality and rationality, and there's the people who are intensely focused on the aesthetic world building and military technological progression. I think each group sometimes forgets the other is around, and becomes neglected or downplayed. The writer's rooms trend more to the first camp though, which is unfortunate for us lore addicts.

It's such a fine line to walk with Trekkies, we put so much clout into *respecting* what has come before and all that effort to preserve "canon" goes unappreciated by the powers that be. On the other hand though, I wouldn't want some overzealous purist to call the shots either. Some things are meant to stay in the 60s and 80s, period. From all the fandom's soapbox grandstanding, I've seen it all: "Star Trek Re*tard", "ADHD Klutzman" and "Bad Reboot" being the usual insults thrown around in boards. Not to mention the strange 25% conspiracy theories being paraded by suspect channels like "Midnight's Edge". WTF. I've always been a skeptic of that 25% Prime whatever Theory because the image of CBS lawyers sifting through Trek blueprints, reading through encyclopedias and deciding what defines "25% different" is peak mental gymnastics.

I think its sad for people to come up with grandiose theories to justify their dissatisfaction to a show. Again, shifting blame to others rather than their little perfect selves. The fandom's authoritative armchair critics have literally become unbearable because of this and as a fan, you are cornered and forced to pick a side. The silent judgmental tone is eerily unsettling, you're either a true Trekkie or drinking the kool-aid. We've all been there. When some insecure dudebro questions your Trek *credentials* over some worthless, throwaway text. I think its a rite of passage, so cry me a river.

The prevailing mindset is story first, technology/designs later, apparently. What's damning to me is they can't even get the preachy narrative bits right, further magnifying the flaws in both areas. Ultimately creating a show product that pleases neither camp. In just a few short years, I've personally seen and known some old, loyal fans finna' calling it quits, which is rather tragic. Retreating to their own headspace worlds, charting their own course and hoping to recapture Trek that feels genuine and well, like home. Leaving hapless neophytes like me to pick up the pieces and say, --don't let the door h-- where did it all go wrong?

Where I come from we have a saying, "pwede na yan" - and I never thought I'd see the day where it would describe Trek's current culture to a tee. Granted, my *views* may be different because I operate as an artist first, Trek fan second. But still, do I see myself in the same situation in 5 to 10 years down the road? Where does this *narrative* take us I wonder, what's next?

It's Kobayashi Maru on a fandom scale.
