Question, do you boil with clay on the bait, or attach after? I'm looking into making customs myself, but am unsure which way is better. This is AMAZiNG btw, absolutely fantastic.

Neither actually. I bake the whole thing in the oven at around 225•F. Because the vinyl doesn't stand up to heat all that well this needs to be done for short periods of time with breaks in between and therefore takes a lot longer than curing a sculpture would.

Interesting. I've heard boiling can sometimes leave the clay rather soft, or warp the vinyl, so I can see why baking is also an option. Thank you so much though, very helpful info.

Keep in mind that it's not the heating that cures polymer clay. It's actually the cooling process, you just need to get the clay to that temperature and then let it cool. Vinyl definitely can melt, I've been lucky enough to not have this happen. You really have to watch it and take it out often. Baking a custom toy compared to a sculpture takes 3-4 times as long because of all the breaks. Remember to bulk out clay with tin foil or air drying epoxy clay so that the sculpey isn't too thick and you shouldnt have any issues with proper curing!

Yes, and it's really important to watch for overbaking, or melting before even taking it out once. (Though it'd be a few times in for the overbaking)
I was also looking into epoxy clay myself for customs, or just customization of anything that can't be baked. Thank you sooo much for all of this advice, it's very helpful!
