Excellent job on the character. I feel for the future if you do really want to work on BGs you should definitely just do the BG alone. It is tough to stray away from always including a character, because that's kinda what we do lol. With that said the background itself that you've done is solid, but you just may have needed to push yourself a bit more. Maybe something bigger that would demand more detail. A populated city, under a bridge, or even a simple town or landscape would do wonders for you I think, especially since you spend a decent chunk of time on them on your comic. Focus on making you're BGs feel more organic if you know what I mean.
For the piece itself there isn't really anything mechanically wrong with it. You did a great job throwing your shades and cast shadows, but sometimes the shading makes it unclear where your actual light source is coming from. And since your including a background you really have to think about that. It looks great on the hair area and you can tell that some light is coming behind her, but when you get to the lower area it starts to become a little more of general lighting than lighting reacting to whats going on in the background. Another simple way that could have spiced up the picture was maybe to add a reflection if she was looking out the window.
On a side note backgrounds are something I need improvement on myself. I might end up working on something like this myself. Also I hope you don't mind the little critiques. I feel like if we all really want to improve we must tear each other apart with everything we notice.

It's not terrible. Just a bit annoyed I can't work on my tablet due to set up theres. so for now I've been filling my sketchbooks with studies and such. Actually had a tiny breakthrough with how I approach a picture which is super useful.
