As a fan of my countryβs Imperial past, this hits me really hard and makes it resonate even more. Glad that your things have lightened up a bit since 2012 though.

Thanks for your thoughts. I'd hoped this picture would convey an air of tragedy instead of simply looking monstrous. From what I know of history, Imperial Germany was no worse than the British Empire and had no wish to go to war against the English-speaking world, though alliances made this inevitable. I know I'm not saying anything new when I add the Treaty of Versailles helped set the stage for Nazism and eventually another world war, but it's worth saying anyway.

I see this and of course I think of the childhood of other infamous people such as Hitler and Stalin...
Yet, I do not believe people are born evil. Yet, the child here isn't a newborn per sey, but has been exposed to toxic, false ideals...
This is why good parenting is so important, I think.

I see in an earlier comment that this is meant to represent Hohenzollern Germany, but this image and the poem immediately made me think of the first world war and what a waste of life it was... WWII was certainly horrific but the war that came before it is what made it possible.

hmmm... an excellent drawing, and combined with a wonderful poem!
this is a good depiction of the force of militarism/absolutism, and the general ending of those empires...Β
scary as hell, disturbing as reality.

Glad you like it. This is one of my personal favourites, though like a few other pieces from early 2012 it came from a pretty dark place. I sometimes wish I could rekindle the feelings that inspired this stuff instead of just trying to imitate it (as I've done, without much success, a couple of times this year) but I don't miss the external factors.
I got the idea from Mark Ryden (specifically his "Little Boy Blue") but dropped the saccharine sweetness and swastikas for a hopefully more ugly and brutal aesthetic. Instead of being yet another scathing assessment of Nazism, it alludes to the short history of an ambitious butΒ ultimately tragic stateΒ (Hohenzollern Germany, 1871-1919) but could be read as a metaphor for the fate of all empires.

I like it! The Germanic look I assumed just represented militarism in general,
and that the little demon presided over a dead world that his games have
killed ages ago...I must admit the image conjures up dark moods...Bravo!

I love your poetry.
Also looks like Young Heinrich got rejected for a role in the 4 horsemen as War.
