Hmmmm. Black on white. White on black. Black on white. Tone. (Recite to the beat of Obla dee, oblado, life goes on, bra.)

YOU, referencing a SONG?!

Sol-Caninus In reply to jhames34 [2011-03-23 03:20:02 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. And got it wrong. It's "obladee, obladah, life goes on bra!" Not "oblado". Unless I'm thinking of one by P-Diddy, where he says "obladee, oblado, life goes on bro!" . . . nah.

Despite being allergic to the Beatles I'm favouriting this anyway 'cause you've drawn them so great. It reminds me a bit of the Tales From Dr Feelgood cover, which I love [link]
And the noses are brilliant, especially Ringo's.

No no you were right the first time, that IS the Beatles singing I got you, babe, it was the B-Side to their smash hit "Gypsies Tramps and Thieves"

Weird Al was the soundtrack to mine, which means my youth was a low budget comedy!

Realistic and stylized all at once. I still return to the music compositions of these guys as with many rock icons. But it's been a while since I've drawn "Rock 'n' Roll" artwork. Glad you like George -- I like his work too. And I like this piece -- brings back memories of my own rocker art.

Awesome! It's great seeing you drawing a portrait-- I love that one can recognize who they are, but at the same time it looks like your work all around. It took me a while to "get" the Beatles as well. Same with the Stones, though for some reason I started appreciating their music much earlier than the Beatles stuff...

Yeah, the Stones had the devil in 'em, much easier to appreciate

I am amazed by the fanatics of the Beatles. It is absolutely CRAZY how we as humans react to celebrities. The Beatles fans took this to a new level.

Great pic!!! I especially like George!!

Indeed, fanatics are lame...George is my favorite of the Beatles, he took their sound with him into his solo career

It's weird but I never really dug 'em that much. I have about 35 Rolling Stones' albums (yes, vinyl!) but I don't know if I even have one Beatles record. I mean I don't hate 'em or anything, they just don't move me the way The Stones do, or Elvis, or Muddy Waters, or Hank Williams Sr., or The Animals, or The Velvet Underground or, CCR, or . . . well, you get the idea. Kinda strange, I know, but that's me. Cool pic though. Ringo and Lennon are especially good, IMHO.

jhames34 In reply to Huwman [2011-03-22 02:34:09 +0000 UTC]

The Velvets and Hank Sr for sure, I prefer both of them to the Beatles...the Stones, I think I overplayed them growing up because I don't get into them as much anymore...the Animals are great too but I'm not into them like the Velvet Underground or Hank or Nick Cave or Tom Waits, which is pretty much the top of the pile for me

Huwman In reply to jhames34 [2011-03-22 03:00:36 +0000 UTC]

Very similar here, except I also listen to a lot of country and blues from as far back as the 1920s and up and a LOT of obscure rockabilly (and some not so obscure). I really haven't heard enough Nick Cave but I'm almost sure I'd like him if I did. I've hear he's better than Justin Biever or whatever that brats name is.

jhames34 In reply to Huwman [2011-03-22 14:40:30 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, Nick Cave does a cover of the TRADITIONAL Black Betty by Leadbelly, who I also like a great deal, along with Son House...Looka Looka yondah
[link]
I love Lee Hazlewood, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams Sr and III, and Slim Whitman, I might like a couple other country singers that aren't coming to mind, do you have a couple old school country guys you recommend?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Huwman In reply to jhames34 [2011-03-22 15:17:57 +0000 UTC]

Nice. Then it sort of morphs into a different Leadbelly song that I actually have on CD. I'm definitely going to have to look into that particular Cave, if you'll excuse the expression.

As for old country guys, let's see: I guess you won't go wrong with Lefty Frizzel or Roy Acuff. Going WA back there's Jimmie Rodgers, who has some cool tunes and shouldn't be confused with Jimmy Rogers the blues guitarist of Jimmy Rodgers who di "Honeycomb". I think there's also a Jimmy Rogers that is a folksinger! The one you want is the "Singing Brakeman" who did "Muleskinner Blues" and "Waiting on a Train" the like. He died in the 30s so this stuff is very old. I also love a lot of the guys that sort of straddled country/blues/rock like Charlie Feathers or carl Perkins and of course the great Link Wray for awesome guitar.

For country guys that are still alive, Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson are pretty amazing. I also like Dwight Yoakam, Robbie Folks and Wayne "The Train" Hancock for younger "retro" guys. And you'll never go wrong with Billy Joe Shaver.

I could go on but I'd better stop there!

I actually have a version by Leadbelly that is exactly that way, with the two songs together, though I've heard them seperately as well...Thanks for taking the time to make some recommendations for me as well!

Huwman In reply to jhames34 [2011-03-22 15:32:01 +0000 UTC]

Interesting. My version definitely has just the last bit alone.

By the way, did I mention Justin Bieber? He's great! The lyrics are especially deep. I mean, has anyone ever made a more poignant commentary on the human condition than, "Oh baby, oh baby, oh baby, oh baby, o-o-oh baby"?

It really says it all.
