Description Here's a pretty thorough walk through of the creation of a page. 'Download' for bigger file!

1. 8x11 layouts in ballpoint with a bit of photoshop to clarify shapes.

2. Blue pencils

3. raw scan of inks done with a brush, micron, nib, china marker, and spatter.

4. inks cleaned up in photoshop in preparation for color. I added a layer of Grey on the crab because at the last minute I wanted to add spatter on a different layer to make it a wetter, grosser scene. And the grey was there to make sure that Dave didn't miss it. It was probably wholly unnecessary.

5. Dave Stewart makes sweet, sweet color on my page. Isn't he the greatest?

I'm so glad B.P.R.D has brought my favorite artists together. This is so dynamic. I struggle a lot with action lines, you make it look so simple.

what exactly do you use the china marker for?

In this case it was used to create that textured soft edge on the bullet ricochets on the crab's face in panel 3

cool stuff ! what is it about? Is it possible to order to mid europe?

JHarren In reply to Originalexit [2014-01-31 23:15:14 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure, actually. If you have comic book stores, you can check with your local retailer. Otherwise you can just read them digitally: www.darkhorse.com/Comics/21-52…

You can read the synopsis on the site, and see if you're interested

Nice walk through.  Always my favorite to see the walk through.  It's like having to show the work in math class.  A lot of the time the journey is the destination.

do you just skip penciling and go straight to inking on top of the blue pencils? awesome stuff. thanks for sharing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JHarren In reply to sonnakolbE [2014-01-31 07:55:22 +0000 UTC]

Yea, the blue pencils are my pencilling stage. That way I don't have to waste time putting graphite down and erase it afterwards.
