Description A monster symbolic of jealousy thrusts its serpentine tail into Rinaldo's visor.
I have always loved Ariosto's Orlando Furioso.

My first attempt at watercolors in two years. This is actually quite experimental, I used a large amount of ink and used extra absorbing paper for biomedical use, it's not suposed for watercolor but I like how it absorbs the color so quickly that you can't change a bit.

Minor edits: added digital blur here and there for atmosphere and lowered color saturation because the violet was too distracting.

=====================

Il mostro al petto il serpe ora gli appicca,
che sotto l'arme e sin nel cor l'agghiaccia;

-Ariosto, Orlando Furioso, 42:50

=====================
English Translation>

The monster threw a serpent at his breast,
That froze his heart beneath its iron case:
Now through the vizor flung the poisonous pest,
Which crept about his collar and his face.
Dismaid, Rinaldo fled the field, and prest
With all his spurs his courser through the chase:
But not behind the hellish monster halts,
Who in a thought upon the crupper vaults.

-Ariosto, Orlando Furioso, 42:50

Well... pure pigments are the magic ingredient. Get some pure pigments and you'll see what I say.

ah ah... I forgot... if you pay attention to the description, I used extra absorbent paper... that helps a lot too.

I see.. but don't the colors loose intensity when you add a thick white? I've always hated working with watercolors and aquarelle cos it looks so weak no matter what you do... Perhaps ink is the magic ingredient

Many thanks, I'ts watercolor with ink and some white gouache. I'm not the type of artist that makes watercolor vaporeous and soft... I like it strong... as strong as it can be.

daga... de principio trata de sacar a la serpiente del casco... pero luego huye al ver que no puede.

La imagen captura el momento en que trata de sacarse los celos.

wow~~ you certainly have a distinct style! the colours are really saturated and seems like there's plenty of layers beneath the dark surface... very very unique techniques!

master piece!?...

This doesn't look at all like my older watercolors, I used to be much more classic, maybe I'll scan a couple and upload... if I find 'em in my archive... ugh... to go there...

I'll keep painting allright. But I must concentrate in my stone sculpture and my 22 photos or else... my semester is about to end.

I like it. I have a feeling you'd work well with acrylics.
I love how its so abstract - I couldn't figure it out until I read the description.
I personally wouldn't have decreased the saturation - but I guess you did it for your own vision.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jhas777 In reply to eclipsed-mind [2004-11-17 04:09:33 +0000 UTC]

Ah well... I didn't decreased it much. Thanks... Indeed the work was intentionally obscure... but I wanted Rinaldo to have human proportions and a good armor.

About acrylics... not shure, I hate how they dry too fast... And I like the paint to be wet like for hours... I have worked fine with Oleums many times, but that's different.

Thanks for the comment.

eclipsed-mind In reply to Jhas777 [2004-11-17 06:11:56 +0000 UTC]

You can buy acrylic retaders which slow down how fast they dry. I just thought you might like them because of the texture and the way the paint was dragged in places. Just a thought anyway
I like that acrylics dry fast - mainly because I'm impatient and I prefer to build layers upon layers when I'm painting.

The acrylic medium for pigments was made by a mexican ingeneer with comision of a mexican muralist painter> David Alfaro Siqueiros... who was also teacher of Pollock during a small course he gave in New York... as much as Pollock is refered as the king of action painting, action painting was a personal devenloping of some of siqueiros core ideals.
