Description Hadaeon Epoc Earth 4.6 billion y.a. Prior to the Theia-Luna creation event.
A big meteor plunges through the thick, ash-filled atmosphere,  smack-dab into the center of an immense volcanic caldera.
Note the atmospheric shock-wave  surrounding the impactor.
This is happening in the northern latitudes where the crust is thick, and can support such formations.  In the equatorial regions, the magma is too hot and soft,  and craters quickly disappear.
