some people can't get it right

What I mean is that that it's been taken WAY too seriously, like it's the only thing that matters in anything.

Np. So can you give me a basic idea or definition on c-d? And to tell you the truth, sometimes I feel the aspect is taken too seriously than it needs to be.

Okay, what I'm saying is that people tend to make a BIG dealΒ "character development" a little too much. Sorry for saying that, but I had to speak out

It's ok to have an opinion that's straightforward

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MKSfan14 In reply to Jimma1300 [2013-12-20 00:33:06 +0000 UTC]

But basically, character developmentΒ is just telling things about the character right?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

It means making a character interestingΒ

Well said. Development and fleshing out of a character are essential to everyone, villains included.

That's why I prefer villains like Bowser and Dr. Eggman; they're bad guys and legitimate threats, but they have developed personalities, being bumbling, comedic, and quite full of themselves, and they even have something close to moral standards and aren't afraid to team up with their archenemies to prevent another enemy from taking over (even if it's just so THEY can rule, haha!).

Jimma1300 In reply to DarkmarkMSX [2013-07-17 02:52:06 +0000 UTC]

Eggman was likeable in Sonic X (Just a shame 4kids raped it), but he's been an idiot in the comics lately. I suppose it's all down to how one portrays a certain character

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DarkmarkMSX In reply to Jimma1300 [2013-07-17 04:27:26 +0000 UTC]

I was referring mainly to the games.

Eggman was too much of a joke in Sonic X for my taste, particularly in the third season.

Yeah, Eggman's a complete idiot in the recent comics, especially in Mecha Sally and the Mega Man crossover. It's ironic because the comics actually try to make him more of a threat while still giving him comedic moments as well, but they don't just mesh together that well, especially compared to recent games like Colors and Generations. It's driven home even more by the fact that he makes so many dumb tactical moves even though he's SUPPOSED TO BE A FORMER WARLORD. That's not funny and making his character complex; that's just stupid and making him look like a fool!

i think so, which is why a lot of people are in favour of Pure evil Julian from SatAM

KyaniteArcher [2013-01-06 07:10:51 +0000 UTC]

Agreed. I've read a few fanfics which are a good example of this, where the "villain" actually has a heart. Most stories just portay the villain as some dude with no heart. Even Harry Potter does this.

Jimma1300 In reply to KyaniteArcher [2013-01-06 10:53:54 +0000 UTC]

I don't know much where the villain is good-hearted

You might want to check out [link] . Masila is actually a famous Neopian villain in Neopets canon, and in the fic Hanso's Journal(which this story is based off) by the author herself. HJ is /long/ but it's worth a read because many characters who seemed "evil" in the beginning were later shown to be not that evil.

This is why i hate the psychopathic mad scientist villains who really do little besides brag about themselves everytime they open their mouth

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

streakpie [2013-01-06 06:21:30 +0000 UTC]

THIS.

I can think of so many examples of this. So many.

Evil for the sake of being evil sucks. Sometimes, I think it's even worse than having a no-personality hero for the sake of heroism. A lot of work goes into developing heroes, for the fear of falling into bland-hero category, but it basically goes unnoticed.

HOWEVER, people don't call-out bland villains because EVIL IS BADASS, even if that evil is COMPLETELY unrequited and we get NO explanation for it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

hammers-in-jammers [2013-01-06 06:15:12 +0000 UTC]

Purely evil villians are boring and largely unbelievable. That's why I like sympathetic vilians that people can relate to. Also, some of them aren't even evil; they're just put in that light for the sake of the story, so most people don't even bother to question it (which bothers me!).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Jimma1300 In reply to hammers-in-jammers [2013-01-10 04:04:41 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, i hate when people just say evil is awesome, sexy etc. regardless of development and consider heroes to be bland and predictable in comparison even if they are well developed

Power is naturally attractive for most people, that's why.

Jimma1300 In reply to hammers-in-jammers [2013-01-10 19:36:20 +0000 UTC]

When people say "Evil is sexy". I kinda hope they just mean it in terms of looks, because i'd agree with them if that case, but it seems that people do find it sexy for them to cause pain and suffering to others *facepalm*

I don't have anything against people if they do have sadomasochist tendencies or something like that.

Jimma1300 In reply to hammers-in-jammers [2013-01-12 00:05:04 +0000 UTC]

I tend to associate sadomasochism with dominatrixes rather than psychopaths

Gender has little to do with BDSM. Also, I was just saying that it probably arouses them.

I just think it means that people potential find terrorism/Nazism sexy if they enjoy seeing characters do bad things to the innocent

Kudos for making this.

Character development is what makes a fictional character great, not because they're heroic or evil.

Jimma1300 In reply to SonicSatamX93 [2013-01-05 06:02:04 +0000 UTC]

Thanks man

Im also having a poke at the fangirls who obsess over villains and consider heroes to be boring no matter how much development they have with this

You're welcome.

Well, I'm glad you're calling this out. There's too much love for the villains.

Jimma1300 In reply to SonicSatamX93 [2013-01-05 10:04:40 +0000 UTC]

At the end of the day, showing love for the villains only means you're probably gonna see your favourite characters end up dead or in prison for their evil deeds

SonicSatamX93 In reply to Jimma1300 [2013-01-05 10:16:47 +0000 UTC]

Ironically, I do enjoy watching a villain show just how vile and despicable he can be. A good series does need a dastardly villain I will admit.

But nothing I enjoy about villains more than seeing the heroes literally beat the crap outta them. It's so exhilarating seeing the heroes just smack them around to the point they're on the ground, moaning in pain.
