Description one of many indonesian foods being sold alongside the road, just like american hotdog shop(?), only this is one of many varieties. the food consist of cooked rice shaped(molded?) like a diamond, cooked inside a diamond-shaped container made from coconut leaves. usually they're cut into pieces and eaten with 'sayur', which means 'vegetable' but sayur in here means somekind of indonesian soup or stew that goes along with the ketupat (like.. uh something made from spices, coconut milk, chillies, papaya (young/small papaya) etc, or semur which is a dark, sweet tofu + potato and sometimes meat stew)

the picture looks better scanned than the real thing (on paper :\) and I used cheap watercolor.. but please tell me how to watercolor better so crits welcomed.

again, great loose style.
I'm not sure what kind of advice to give on improvement- because you already have a good color pallete going on, good tone quality, and a set style that works.
I would not have known however, what was going on here without the description., With the description though- it works. Sounds like a healthy snack too! p:

the only thing I know about watercolor is that you can paint with just water first if you want to keep the paint in a certain area.
but yeah, anyway.. real warm n comfy colors here

Wet the paper then let the surface dry while the middle layer of paper stays wet

Use "thicker" paint, and then use water to spread the edges of the paint so that you get some areas that have super concentrations of color & some see through areas. This painting needs more "thick" paint, or you can trace some of the lines, especially shadow lines in ink to create depth.

You really only need 4 colors to paint. A brown, either sepia or burnt umber. A middle blue, a cool yellow and a middle red. You can mix any colors from those 4, and they will always have harmony.

Hey Jin, could you cook up some of that crazy concoction up for me when you come back to Canada? It sounds rather appetizing. ^_^

And this looks better than anything I could ever watercolour.
